I definitely notice the additional buoyancy , but maybe it's not as much as a wetsuit. The latter seems to make some parts of the body (legs) more buoyant than others and, at least for me, kind of messes with my 'feel" in the water. I'm not much faster with the wetsuit than without. Then again, I don't use it much, just for a few OWS and races in the US. Last year when I injured my elbow, I could swim pain free in the salt water a good month before I could do so in the pool. It's more of a gentle all-over lift from the water, so that you ride higher on it than in the pool.

The beach I was at (Sentosa) isn't that amazing--water isn't the cleanest due to large commercial fleet parked several hundred meters offshore, but it's safe, partly sheltered in a bay, and has lifeguards, changing rooms and lockers--perfect for a solo OWS workout, I wasn't the only swimmer out there! Hope to get back the this evening for one more swim!

Just checked my Singapore swims on Google Maps and they are closer to 2500m each, but that sounds too fast (1:36/100m, which is my best 1000m TT), so splitting the difference and calling it 2200m. Going to call it 85,600m as of today (swam again Monday PM but didn't post). Managed to get the mother of all colds (actually felt a little off all weekend but chalked it up to walking around a lot in the heat; the flight really made me feel worse) so hoping I'll be well enough to race by Saturday. I had to go into work today to print some documents and air con is off due to holiday, so maybe I can "sweat it out". Heading home now for nap. At least it will be no problem to taper--I don't feel like doing anything anyway.

Sorry you are not feeling well, HR!  Hope you kick it before Saturday.

I got 2900 in this morning, getting close to 53miles.  I just checked my totals from Jan 26/13 to today, and I am close to 245 000 meters!

Keep it up everyone!

Yes, HR, hope you feel better and good, good luck this weekend!!! Full RR please :)

Kirsten, that is some serious swimming.  You mentioned before that you have had shoulder issues in the past.  What did you have and does it ever bother you now?

Kirsten, that is some serious swimming.  You mentioned before that you have had shoulder issues in the past.  What did you have and does it ever bother you now?

It was biceps tendinitis (I was off swimming from July-ish to Nov-ish).  And yes, I have to make sure I warm up well and stretch well.  I just got a new tri bike and it has been bothered from being in aero.  I have to be careful to not cross over the midline on my stroke.

OK.  Good to know.

Sorry to hear about the bike aggravation.  Have you tried bumping your pads out a bit?

84,000, almost to 88 (or 50 miles)

Really seeing again where I have to keep focus on what I'm doing with the fatigue as opposed to just slugging it out.

2500y last night
53,500y total

Time trialed a 500 the other day...with a little extrapolation (my pool is, oddly, neither 25 yards nor 25 meters, but about halfway in between so I generally just count it as yards), I think I averaged 1:26/100y. It was late in my workout, I was tired, but wanted to see what I could do in that circumstance. I haven't time trialed a 500 since my last race, either, so my pacing was a little off. Honestly, I think I can probably get down to 1:20/100y if I feel like really going after it right now. Still nothing close to my high school or college days, but will serve me okay in my races.

89,850. Stopped at 3,000 today. Losing battle with keeping a full stroke due to fatigue. Thursday was tougher than I thought. Tomorrow will be a little more focused on opening things up again and being ready for a stronger masters session on Sunday.

Up to 89,350m (somewhat of an estimate owing to OWS and non standard pools as of today. Today 1800m worth of the most miserable tri swim I think I've ever done. I still wasn't feeling 100% (maybe 70-75%) but raced anyway as was definitely on an upward curve. But water uncomfortably cold and quite rough, weird course with very few buoys. Unlike most of my recent races, we were 500m or so out to sea in turbulent open ocean and couldn't help thinking, if I have an asthma attack, or get hypothermia, or cramp, I'm going to die. Wanted to take swim easy but couldn't as too cold. Actually had to stop and do breaststroke a few times to catch breath as lungs not quite up to race pace. Never been so glad to see a swim finish. It took less than 32 minutes but just seemed to go on forever. So cold after it took me 15 km on the bike to warm up. Fortunately the bike went well ( still waiting on official results but I think considerably faster than last year) and, while not a stellar run, managed to run myself into 2nd in AG and 3rd overall.

Yes, I know cold water (well, low 70s) is odd for Vietnam. But the central coast around Hue is known for cold, rough seas and, sometimes, weird weather! My next race is in Indonesia, smack on the equator. Warm, with tropical fishies. Can't wait for that swim!

1800 last night and 3100 today

117 000 metres in 2014. Missed a few days due to a bug.

No big sets today. Just set up work.

3x200 pull @ 2:35 hold 2:16
3x100 @1:25 hold 1:06-7
4x50 fly @1:15 hold under 32.5

Last night was drills, a few fast 25s and some starts from the blocks.

Shaping up to be a light week. Tonights trainer spin will be my last hard session. Now to plan my week for to allow for both swim frequency and recovery.

Good to see you're feeling better. Do fly sets usually have a lot more rest than other strokes?

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
