New half distance triathlon in 2014 in Alton, IL.  I'm intrigued, as it is located near me (I live south of St. Louis).  Doesn't appear to be a real challenging course, but the time of year is good for closing the season on a high note.

I have been pleased with other events produced by this race management team.  Looking forward to the registration opening on January 15th.

The swag looks cool:

Swag: Stuff we all Get

Official Border War Custom Race Bib

Official Border War Swim Cap

Official Border War Race Bags (One for T1 Bag Check)

1 Sweet Swag Item-Official Border War Jacket

Official Border War Finisher Medal

Border War Race Photos

Post Race Party/Grub PAPPY'S BBQ

I registered yesterday to take advantage of the bag upgrade.  They said they had 96 registrants as of this morning.  They are also giving out training shirts if you register before 1/31.  Your team is identified on the back (East vs West).  Good way to get your registrants to advertise for you.

I got signed up before the price bump. Glad to see the were offering the XTerra bag upgrade - that will come in handy. This will be my first HIM - looking forward to it!

Did either of you receive your T-shirt in the mail yet? The website said that they would be mailed out on Feb 1 but I have not seen it.

I haven't, but I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that the ship date was the 13th of Feb? Even if that was the case I'd expect to have received mine by now. Not that it matters all that much - too cold to bike or run in short sleeves yet anyways!

I contacted them on FaceBook on Sunday 2/23.  I received the following response that same day:

They are planned to go out this week...we are excited to get those early registered a sweet shirt to rock out! We will post here when they ship!

Nothing posted to FaceBook yet.

Man, I wish I was ready for this.

Pappy's makes a damn fine excuse to go 70.3 miles.

I wonder if they feed volunteers too.

I don't know if they do or not, but it would seem rude not to. Volunteers are the lifeblood of a successful event.

At every tri I've volunteered at they have.  And given the fact that I'll probably be there for most of the day (I'll be working transitions), I hope they will here too.

I live 60 miles away.  I may commute or camp at Pere Marquette Park (20 miles north of Alton on the bike course).

Word to the wise - the mosquitos have been out in full force for the last week or so. Bring your bug spray!

Unfortunately, another bug got me and I didn't get to race.  Came down with Bronchitis.

That stinks, but it was a VERY good decision not to race as the air temps at the start were upper 40's and the water temp was a very cold 54 degrees. A large percentage of the athletes were severely cramping in T1 after coming out of that water (myself included), and I know quite a few were also getting treated for symptoms of hypothermia. After that was done the sun eventually came out around 10:00 or so and temps got into the mid-60s which was nice.

So I live pretty close to this race and was looking to doing it next year. How many people were signd up? I tend to stray away from newer races bc i don't like when you are out on the bike or run and no one is around you. It makes me feel like I spent alot of money to train. So let me know how the race environment was?!?!

Thanks
Nina

The RD said over 500 had signed up, but I don't know if that was just the HIM folks or if it include the aquabikes. The official results had ~340 finishing the HIM, but that could be disporportionately low because of the cold swim causing many to drop for hypothermia or for not making the bike cutoffs if they got pulled by medical after exiting the swim. I've heard stories of both.

I was most definitely in the back of the pack (and expected to be since it was my first and I was there to complete), but I didn't feel alone on the course except towards the end of the bike (maybe the last 10 miles?) and the 2nd half of the run. Since both of those legs were out-and-back (less so on the bike - it had some loops and twists but was out-and-back on 94 for a long stretch), that's going to happen no matter how many participants there are unless you are solidly MOP or better. Even as late as I was coming in, T2 had a good vibe to it and there was plenty of post-race goodies for everyone.
