HITS Triathlon Series
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 04m 44s
Overall Rank = 175/227
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 19/22
Pre-race routine:

Traffic was a nightmare coming in so any kind of routine went out the window. Scrambled just to get out of transition and to the water in time for the start.
Event warmup:

Managed a short swim to get warmed up a little before waiting for the sprint swim to finish.
Swim
  • 33m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

The waves on the first leg were pretty good sized and took a lot of energy to fight through. My time goal coming in was 30 minutes, so with the waves and the long run to T1 I wasn't terribly disappointed with 33 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Stay in a little closer to the buoys. I stayed well to the outside of the most direct route to avoid traffic so I probably swam a little farther than was really necessary.
Transition 1
  • 04m 58s
Comments:

Terrible transition. About halfway through the first lap of the swim I realized I had forgotten to fill my water bottle for the bike, so I lost time doing that.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to fill my water bottle beforehand and move a bit faster.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 43s
  • 25 miles
  • 18.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I took it really easy on the bike to save energy for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder. I had planned to go easy, but I went too easy. I could have easily been 5-10 minutes faster without a whole lot more effort.
Transition 2
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

T2 was good overall, but I lost time stopping at the Port-a-potty on the way out.
What would you do differently?:

Have a bigger bladder
Run
  • 1h 01m 29s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I've never run a 10K before so I was a little worrieed about the distance. I stuck to my plan and did 8-10 minutes of running then 1-1.5 minutes walking and it seemed to work pretty well. Even with the walk breaks I averaged sub-10 minute miles, which for me is good.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for the run. It has always been my weakness so I rend to neglect it. Also, remember my hat.
Post race
Warm down:

Very little. Lots of water and some walking while I waited for my sister to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first Olympic distance, so I was very conservative in my approach. A combination of early season lack of fitness and unfamiliarity with the distance were my biggest limiters. My goal was 3 hours, finished in 3:04 with slow transitions and a way too conservative bike leg. I've already identified where I could shave off a good 15 minuted without much more effort.

Event comments:

I didn't stick around for the post race activities as there didn't appear to be any. The expo area consisted of about 5 vendors, and they were packing up pretty early. But worst of all- there was no beer!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
