Subject: my Triumphant Return to Arizona

My 'A' race this year is Ironman Arizona in November, which I'm calling my Triumphant Return to Arizona. I want to PR my race this November, because it's been a long road trying to race again in Arizona.

My first IM was IM Arizona in April 2006.  My second and fastest (11:53) was IM Arizona April 2007.  My third was April 2008, that was the year they had a second iM Arizona in November, and it's been in November since.  I've done a total of nine IMs, but I haven't managed to make it back to Arizona.  In 2011, I signed up but dropped out because it was the same weekend as my middle daughter's Dad's Weekend at college. I didn't want to disappoint her.  In 2012, I signed up but dropped out because of work pressures and time constraints.  And I signed for this last race, and was training hard, but then I crashed and broke my collarbone and that was that.  And not only did I have to cancel IM Arizona, I also had to drop out of IM Los Cabo that's coming up in March, because it's just too close.

Last Wednesday, 15 weeks after surgery, my doctor cleared me for swimming, running; he cleared me in December for biking.  So now I'm fully back to training. Last Wednesday I spent 15 minutes in the pool to find that my collarbone is fine, but my shoulder has range-of-motion issues from 9 weeks in a sling. I did a lot of stretching since then, and this morning I spent 30 minutes in the pool this morning for a total of 500 yards. Nothing longer than 100 yards without stretching. But it's coming back pretty easily.

I think my plan is going to be based on Fink's Competitive plan. Probably a half HIM in June, and a lot of biking and running. I have swim coach in mind who is also a rehabilitation therapist; hopefully he has time on his schedule for me.

You have a long history with this race. This year will be yours!

Your range of motion will come back. Did they prescribe any PT?

I busted my collarbone on July 2012; I also tore a ligament. My doc didn't clear me for any S/B/R for 12 weeks. I came out of my sling 8 weeks post-op then did PT for a month, and I did it diligently. When I got back in the pool it didn't take long to get my swimming back. I built slow for the first 3 weeks and then went a little harder and had no problems. I am faster now then I was before my accident, granted I am not very fast.

One thing I have notice is my shoulder feels best when I lift. I don't have time to lift now, so I do push-ups; they help, too.

Having broken my collarbone at Austin 70.3 in October, I literally "feel your pain." Planning a comeback at a local 70.3 in September. Here's hoping that 2014 is a time to take care of "unfinished business!" Good Luck!

Thanks!

When I toe the line at IMAZ this November it will be #10th IM start.  I've signed up for more, but cancelled them for one reason or another over the years.

A few weeks ago I tore the MCL and ACL in my right knee and the LCL in my left knee in an accident. Can I returned to triathlon? What would that entail?

As endurance athletes, by definition we must go to our borders to find our center. There is meaning in suffering, we tell ourselves, but not in stupidity.

I have a torn labrum in the right hip that I'm getting surgery for this Friday. Also the doctor is grinding some bone that caused it to tear. Do you have any good ideas on returning to training?

It is my opinion that even though everyone else considered her a triathlete, she did not consider herself one. I think she still felt like she had no fitness direction and had given up on triathlon.

Is there a point of diminishing returns? At some point, age catches up with us all. In general, as we age, VO2 max decreases, body fat increases, and muscular strength drops off.

Does it matter how fast you go? Does it matter if you win? No. It only matters that you tri your best and smile when you cross the finish line.
