This is in Lawrence in late March. On the River Trails (off road). Thinking about it. I like Mountain Biking, but am the careful Carl out there so I know I won't be very good. Just sounds like fun (different). Any of you done this race? Looks like Short course is a 2 mile run then 1 lap (9 miles), probably plenty for me.

Not the race, but I've ridden the trails there. Not too bad, NOTHING like Wyco. Probably more closely to SMP Orange trails with less rock.

I did the long course last year, it was hard, very hard. The runs were each a long 2 miles (as in, if you look at past results, the top guys were throwing down 6 min miles, maybe faster, not 7's). The bike trails were soft and sandy and I just sunk and had to grind through it, I dropped like 20 places on the first bike lap and would have gladly dropped down to the sprint had that been an option. That being said, it was a fun race, well run, and a great early season sufferfest, I will do it again, but probably the sprint unless I get a 29er with some wider tires.

I haven't been out there in years but have great memories of those trails.  Sold my mountain bike to buy my first tri bike, so I will have to meet everyone at Johnny's.

I've done this 3 out of the last 4 years and the first couple of years there was only one race distance but the last couple of years they had a short course and long course. When there was only one race it got crowded on the bike trail and sometimes you ended up in the middle of a pack of riders and it was tough to get around. At least with the long course the beginning of the race was crowded (short and long course start off together)but after the first lap you were riding solo for long periods of time as riders seem to get strung out and passing became much easier. I like the mixure of technical/hard and smooth/fast trailsit has to offer....I would say it is about 30% tech/hard and 70% fast/smooth. The challenge is really in the mental/focus and trying to keep alert and getting in and out and around the trees...there were more than a couple of times where I brush a tree or branch. By the time you got to the second run you were worn out mentally and physically and just wanted to finish the race.

I was looking at signing up for the long course--- something different. I haven't done a lot of off road riding, should be interesting.

I was humbled last year. My body shut down on me just before two World Championship events. I was originally in top form to medal in both, but my strength was sapped from me.
