Member 169 | Subject: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? Just curious..... does anyone put cycling shorts on over their tri shorts in T1 as it's a longer bike and my "lady parts" appreciate the gel pad vs thin pad of tri shorts. Longest distance so far is an Olympic and I have 2 Half's this year. Or do you just suck it up to save a minute in transition? Edited by joyct32 2014-03-01 4:45 AM |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? Personally I think two layers of shorts would cause a lot of rubbing and chafing, esp. when starting wet. My tri shorts were fine for the HIM; I've even worn them for an 85 mile ride with no issues. If it was full IM and there was a change tent then sure, I'd probably put on bike shorts, but it didn't seem necessary for a half (anyway, no change tent there). Maybe you need to look into the fit of your tri shorts, your saddle, or the compatibility of the two? I've had one pair of tri shorts that were very uncomfortable even for Oly length, and two pairs that have been fine for rides of up to 5 hours, as well as the HIM. Some pairs just mesh better with one's anatomy and saddle than others. |

Bike shorts have too much padding and that padding tends to bunch up a lot when in the aero position. This causes all kinds of issues from general discomfort to chafing to numbness, etc. Not as much of an issue in the road position though. I cannot ever use bike shorts on my tri bike. I have done several Ironman races with just the little fleece pad. Your soft tissue stuff down there will get used to the thinner pad. Kind of like building a callus. |

A little discomfort is pretty normal (I actually hollered about my lady bits around mile 50 of my HIM), but I think two pairs would cause more problems. |

643 | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? This worked great for me. I did the tri shorts + bike shorts for my half and full IM. I had 0 issues except that during my IM. I ran over a mile before I realized I was still wearing both of them and was freaking out on what to do. Solution: go to restroom, do my business, and then stash them behind a bush and pick them up after race. I trained like this too so you should try a few rides. I know I need to toughen up down there but the few times I rode 40+ miles in tri-shorts things that should not be sore were very sore and made it hard to run. |

Master 2855 Kailua, Hawaii | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? you might also make sure your bike fit is good. Perhaps you are compensating with the extra padding because things just aren't comfortable to begin with. Just a thought. |

Member 1293 Pearland,Tx | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? For a simple AG'er like me. "Tri Shorts Commando Style." Still just using my stock saddle from HIM to a century ride ,but i blew $$$ and went to a pro fitter that elites go to like Bob a.k.a GMAN up there. |

Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? De soto tri bibs!!!! Prior to those, I used to use the de soto gel seat cover. Gave a little more padding I wouldn't wear shorts over shorts, recipe for chafing |

Member 169 | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? Ok message heard! I wondered about the chaffing factor. I will start buttering the butt and train in tri shorts. |

Member 169 | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? yup, went back for refit, tipped saddle nose down slightly as I was having "numbing" after an hourish ride. But that's been on the trainer mostly, cant wait for Spring as on the open road I think I'll have more body movement and that may alleviate. |

If anything, having two pairs will actually hold the inner pair closer to the body and have less chaffing. I plan to try the tri shorts only thing again this year but like I said, still curious on why people think two is worst than one. |

I currently don't even own a pair of bike shorts anymore. I'd be curious if tri shorts can be worn comfortably on a road bike, but I guess I won't find out till I throw down the money on a roadie. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: tri shorts vs cycling shorts for 70.3?? Not all tri shorts are the same. Some have a chamois that is just fleece and others have more substantial chamois and are designed for longer races. Look at DeSoto tri shorts to see how different chamois are designed to see what options are out there and other brands have similar different types of tri shorts. I'd skip the double shorts but find shorts that work for you since, since you already addressed your bike fit. |
