I am currently unable to do a lot of cardiovascular training, and am strength training 4 x times a week usually consisting of 3 sets of 8 - 12 reps. I Di need to gain a some strength and muscle mass, but I do fear that I will become to bulky. Is this likely to happen or is it a lot more harder to become too bully for triathlons than. I think? Any advise would be much appreciated

It will not happen. People do not get big by accident.

What kind of routine are you doing?  As long as you're not going too heavy, then you shouldn't worry too much about it.

I come from a weight lifting background and I'm actually trying to go the other way and lose some of my bulk.  I've gone from doing heavy split routines to more ciruit training with exercises that are more specific to triathlon.  I use Mark Allen's routine for the most part.

Getting "big" is something done intentionally and will not just happen accidentally.

Keep your strength training up. If you're still worried don't lift heavy, meaning 6-8 rep sets but do 12-15 and still a bit left on the tank even though the last rep is hard...you'll want to train your muscular endurance anyway-it's a much more useful tool in the tool box for triathlon.

Gym rats are out there day in and day out to get huge, often without success, you'll be just fine.

1.  You have to eat in caloric excess day in and day out to get "bulky".  Endurance athletes rarely do this.

2.  Lift heavier.  3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 reps.  Compound movements.  Endurance athletes on the whole need to build explosive power from strength training.  Squats, deads, cleans, etc.

The cause of the sleeplessness could be anxiety to get out and compete but more often than not the inability to sleep is a fear of what might happen, of what might go bump out on the race course.

Like the fear of being foolish, the fear of failure is very common. The first step in overcoming the fear of failure is to define it. Once defined the steps to overcome it are not difficult.

Good memories are crucial to your success in the water. Trying to swim laps before you are comfortable in the water is likely to reinforce your anxiety, so avoid the white-knuckle approach.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
