Hi
I am looking at different eating diets/habits to see which will help aid my worn out knees and joints and improve fitness - what is your experience and thoughts on these two - low carbohydrate, high fat diet versus vegan ?

any insights would be great

Thanks

you might want to read the dedicated Ketosis thread, tons of info there. I try to keep my total(not net) carb intake under 50g.

I choose fatty meat, bacon, wild game, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese(full fat), full fat dairy, cream over milk. I use butter, mayo, mustards. Olive oil, coconut oil. I eat a ton of olives. I will eat lots of dark green veggies.

I avoid starches, carrots, bananas.

I eat small pieces of fruit, and in limited quantities., except Berries, they have a low GL. I will also do legumes in small quantities . basically I don't do sugar, or grains, no rice, BBQ and Ketchup are usually out of the question as is most salad dressing. if you do juice, small quantities and with the fiber is best, no to no pulp. Nuts are good in small amounts, peanuts are legumes not nuts too.

I cannot speak to knee health, but I know cutting out dairy and added sugar, as well as increasing my consumption of varied fresh vegetables has helped my health all around. I'm not a full vegan since I eat wild caught fish a couple times a week. IMHO, you need to test out what works best for you.

Cutting carbs down to 25 g per day has gotten rid of my cravings and allowed me to stay low cal enough to drop 22 lbs - alot for my 5'1" body. First time I could lose weight in 17 years. The trick will be to add in healthy carbs when I hit my goal wt. so I can maintain loss.

I post this to say that losing the weight has been a relief to my body esp. my knees. They hurt the most when I was my heaviest. running and biking just feel so much easier and less damaging not carrying around a 22 lb. fat suit.

Otherwise I've juiced, been vegan, dairy free blah, blah, blah. Never felt allergies or aches changed. I'm guessing many of those testimonials about healthy diets are from people who previously ate the unhealthy American diet, so that almost anything would make them feel better. My diet is very healthy so I haven't experienced any miraculous results from changes - other than being able to curb the cravings and get control over portions by going low carb.

I'm not aware of any different effects of low-car or vegan on joint health...I prefer carbohydrates, but mostly whole-grain bread. Plain white bread, potatoes and rice and foods high in soluble fiber (beans, bananas) can cause a lot of bloating...So I relate foods more to abdominal than knee issues.
