View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Virginia Beach, Virginia
United States
J&A Racing
45F / 7C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 22m 27s
Overall Rank = 5312/8936
Age Group = 30-34F
Age Group Rank = 533/984
Pre-race routine:

ate: can of tuna mixed with a whole avocado, big cup of coffee
Event warmup:

poop at the farm fresh, walk about 0.5 miles to the start
Run
  • 2h 22m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

started out at my comfy 11 min mile pace with the strategy to stop at every other rest stop for gatorade only. first 2 miles were very cold, but warmed up quickly, glad i decided on shorts and tee shirt. miles 7-8-9 flew by - all below 11 - so i just started to push harder. slowest mile was 11:09 - fastest was 10:34!!! i've never felt SO GOOD on a run. 15min 10sec better than rock and roll.
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING! even with my half-ass training, i had a freaking great race.
Post race
Warm down:

collect goodies in the finishers chute, find jenn and neil, head to the beer tent and dance to the cover band for about an hour. a blast. special thanks to the volunteer that ignored the 4-beer limit for runners, shared some of those freebies with neil.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my training :(

Event comments:

j&a runs a great race. i would REALLY recommend this to anyone looking for a big race experience. less stress and more fun than rock n roll, and the post race was WONDERFUL. i'll probably do this again at some point. screw the rnr!

Nice job - and sorry we didn't get to meet up. Yeah, the marathon starts WAY late! So crazy...I never realized that when I ran the half. I didn't even get to the tent until 1:30-2:00. Just drank a beer and then headed out of town.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
