Subject: Foot falling asleep
I have been a runner for several years and all of a sudden when I start running my feet feel like they are asleep. I haven't bought any new shoes, I have 2 shoes that I rotate and they are have about 250/125 miles on them so they still have some mileage left on them and the feel is in both of the shoes. I am using lace lock laces so I am not tying them any different. Anybody have an idea on why my feet would start feeling like that during the run?

Thanks!

The only time my feet have ever gone numb was in the opening miles of a HIM run...wearing lace locks. I loosened them a bit and it quickly went away. It sounds like you have more experience with them than I had...so that is probably no help at all!
Good luck!

Are your calves tight? Any knots in them?

When my calves get over tight my feet tend to feel that tingly asleep feeling or cramp.

Are your feet swollen? It creates the same issue as lacing up too tightly.

Or you could be like me and it happens to me because of a severely bad back.

when I first started running my foot would be numb after a long (for me) run.

Hasn't happened in a few months.

Or it is really cold when you are running?

Is it possible you tied your shoes too tight? That has happened to me in the past. I like my laces tight and sometimes its too tight.

I have once or twice tightened my lace too much right over the top of my ankle. Which had led to my outer toes going numb. No change some helpful kids has been playing with your shoes and pulled the laces to tight somewhere?

Sometime when this happens I concentrate on spreading my toes when my foot makes contact with the ground and it quickly eases it.

Might also give a foam roller a go on your calf and hamstring to see if (as mentioned above) a knot or sore spot is hurting you.

Sometimes I get a tingly, feeling like foot asleep and it's actually nerve stuff vs. blood flow issues. Pinched nerves, bad bike fit, tight quads, hibs, glutes or back issues up "high" can cause tingly/numbness well down the leg. Might seek PT opinion/treatment if it persists. Are you wearing compression socks/sleeves etc?

This is true in my case. It is either my calves (tight) or higher in my hip.

When one or both of my feet fall asleep during a long run, I pretty much resign myself to regular stretching breaks for the rest of the run. After stretching, I try to either a) focus on floppy feet to encourage loose calf muscles or b) focus on my pelvis/lower back. For me, focusing on my pelvis and lower back means tightening my core, too.

I follow up with the foam roller.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!

It just might be the tight calf or the fact that I am having issues with my hamstring. Will do more stretching as I don't do enough and foam rolling and see if that helps.

Appreciate the help!

I sometimes have severe pains on the top of my left foot. It feels like a knife is stabbing my inner foot on the outer portion of my foot. These pains happen mainly at night but not while riding.

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.
