Pre-race routine:

Why is she driving two hours for a 10k? The answer has some history to it. Sometime in early 2009 I decided to set the goal of running the Walt Disney World half marathon in January 2010. My research indicated that I needed to submit a proof of time to get into a coral. A 10k time was acceptable for the half. Raleigh is an 8k kinda town. There are tons and tons of 8ks but very few 10ks. I widened the search and found a 10k in Carolina Beach. I've always like Carolina Beach so in March 2009, I got up early, drove down, ran my race and drove back. I enjoyed the event enough that I did the same thing in 2010. My plan was to do the round trip again this year but my husband wanted to join me and did not want to get up at o'dark thirty, and the forecast for Friday and Saturday was great, so we made it into an over night trip.

Since the weather was great, we decided to spend a little bit of extra time in Wilmington so we drove down on Friday. I checked in at the early packet pickup and Kevin wanted to go to Fish Bites so that's what we did.

On Saturday morning, we got up at 6. I had an English muffins with peanut butter, a banana, and a bottle of water. At 6:35 we headed to Carolina Beach. We stopped at the Port City Java just across the bridge in Carolina Beach and then headed to the public parking lot by the McDonald's. It was just after 7:00 at this point. Kevin was impressed at how well I had the logistics down. Shortly after we arrived, we saw people start to circle the parking lots looking for spots.
Event warmup:

Short run on Canal with some strides on the way back.

Warm down:

Kevin met me in the finish area, I got a bottle of water and Kevin wanted to know where the medal was (uh, it's a 10k! no finishes medals at 10ks!) and we walked up the boardwalk, grabbed some food and got Emma (I shared the food with her). Emma was in the car because dogs were not allowed on the boardwalk. We hung around for the awards and then drove down to Fort Fisher and had a family walk on the beach.

Walked a few blocks to Sea Merchants Food Store for the start. The announcer read an Irish Prayer. And they're off! I started off a bit fast and then settled into my pace. The route was new this year. We took 7th toward the Intracoastal and looped back on 8th to Carolina Sands/Seafarer. Then we did a loop on the greenway at Carolina Lake. Once we hit Hamlet Street, we could see the ocean and the finish. PR.

Nice run lady!

It sounds like you totally had the logistics dialed in.  That makes everything better on race day.

Cute pic too:)

A whole weekend getaway...with DH, no less..., great weather and planning, AND an AG win? What's not to love about this RR? Ok, didn't love "no dogs allowed on boardwalk", but they have til next year to fix that
