I notice people leave their shoes clipped into the pedals, come out of the water grab their bike, run with it, jump on, slip feet into shoes(already on pedals) and off they go. How do they have their shoes nice and flat so they are able to jump on slip feet in and go?

I thought I heard that they were not letting age groupers do this after last year.

I may be wrong as usual though.

Most triathlons will let you, Ironman events only allow the pros to do it. Honestly, I've never used rubber bands. It's all about doing it enough in practice so you learn where to put the pressure on your foot to allow you to get the front of your foot in... from there, it's all about pushing forward as you pedal to allow your foot to slide in. Once your foot is in... fasten it up and pedal on!

Just make sure one has practiced it lots before trying in a race. I can't tell you how many I've had swerve in front of me while baring moving fast enough to stay upright, as they try to get into their shoes. I'm sure for some it saves time, but its not for me.

It's amazing to me how many people try this for the first time on race day.... Swimming is my strong event, so I'm not usually around when the groups come through... I've just seen them on the races the wife does that I don't.

Don't even attempt this without Tri specific tri shoes like Pearl Izumi Tri Fly or something similar.

Practice it first of course. I don't use rubber bands either. I get on from the left side of the bike so I will have the left pedal in the 10 o'clock position. Run to mount line, then in a smooth motion flip shoe over with my toe and foot on top of shoe at same time swing other foot over while the left is pedaling down and flip the right shoe over and foot on top. Pedal up to speed, then put feet in. I forgot the mention having the right gear is needed as well. An easier gear so the bike will get moving while you are mounting.

This is what I do as well, no rubber bands required.
