So I have this one course I run all the time that goes up a pretty good climb for Il when I normally run it in the daytime you can see it coming for about a half a mile so my heart rate starts to jump even before I get on the uphill portion and usually I really struggle to get to the top at a good pace. So the other night on a really dark night that you could not see that far ahead, I ran the course. My mind kind of zoned out as it can out during a run. Next thing I know I am starting the climb and I get up that climb as fast as I ever have with a heart rate bumping up 25% as much as it normally does.

Guess my hill climbing was mostly mental Doooooooh. Only took me 5 years to figure that out

what was your pace?  i've found i repeatedly run ~30s slower in the dark vs light.  might have had something to do with your HR also.  here is an article talking about what you and i are both describing:

I do feel like am going faster at night so I need to watch my heart rate a little more. Had very nice splits going that night.

I run at night for couple reasons

Morning is when my wife gets to exercise and I have the kids.
In a triathlon you never start a run fresh so I like to do my runs that way.

there is nothing more fun then getting up after lying down with one your kids to help them get to sleep than go outside in 20 degree weather to knock out 13 miles.

I've noticed this effect too. Even with decent lighting.

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?
