Subject: Cycle-ops Fluid 2 finally leaked
I have had my Cycle-ops Fluid II for about 7 years. I had always heard stories of the resistance unit leaking. I was under the impression that the issue had been resolved when I bought the unit. I first noticed a problem when the virtual power appeared much higher than my wired powertap. I thought the wired powertap was failing and called Cycle-ops and got an RMA for the wheel. The wired wheel can no longer be re-calibrated so it was going to be traded out to a wireless unit + a fee. I already have one wireless PT but would be ok with another. I put the wireless powertap in the trainer and the virtual power and PT numbers again were way off. I decided to trade the Cycle-ops unit with my wife's Kurt Kinetic. My virtual and powertap numbers matched perfectly. While swapping the units I noticed oil on the Cycle-ops. Lots of it. I called Cycle-ops to let them know I would not be returning the wired PT hub (it has been working fine) Cycle-ops did send me a replacement resistance unit which I received today. Changing it out was no problem. The new unit is fine, I just would not be comfortable using it in an area where an oil spill would be a problem

I've had two of them leak (the 2nd being the replacement for the 1st).  Cycleops replaced it for free both times no questions asked.

It's great that they do so but still annoying..

Playing devil's advocate, how long is it reasonable for us to expect them to last?  I have a CycleOps Fluid 2 that I bought around 2009, that's not leaking.  I expect it to fail eventually, but  what's a reasonable expectation?

ETA:   I"m assuming that everything fails eventually.

How does the exchange process work? Do you have to send yours back in first, and then you get a replacement, or do they just send you a new one right away?

In both of my cases, I sent it back (through a dealer) and they sent back a replacement.

Until it gets to this point and not a moment sooner!

In my case they just sent me the new unit free of charge. I was supposed to send my unit back but was waiting for the new unit to arrive so I could use the shipping box. I would call it the honour system

I would agree but I have never heard of the Kurt Kinetic leaking. My Cycle-ops had a lot more use than the KK but I have decided to keep my wife's bike on the Cycle-ops and see if I can wear out the KK. Overall I have no complaints but it does appear that the Fluid 2 still has leaking issues. If I had to give an expected life, I would hope 20-25 years is reasonable for a mechanical device. 7 seems a little short.

“Less is more,” is a common buzz phrase in endurance sports today. It refers to the trend of training less but focusing on intensity and quality rather than on quantity.

You ride hard enough that you are working but not so hard that you can’t do the same thing the next day. 700 km or 400 miles a week.
