We actually studied this in Religion class when I was a kid (at Catholic school)  And  more recently, we had several contemporary songwriters that had used the Hebrew proper name (all spelled out, in English) in their songs.   They've been re-worded and all of the latest printings of the hymnals have the new words.   Of course, it would have been better to be more "aware" in the first place... but better late than never, I guess.

I know several Christians that will not ever dare spell as God. They will always do G-d because they are not worthy.
Personally people get too hung up on words. Just like some of the people I know who always use G-d also Blaspheme God if you say it or spell it in Arabic.
