Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about using the silver membership intermediate ironman training plan, but am not sure about the running part.

I normally do 3 runs in a week of around 45min - 1.5 hour. The plan has more short runs, around 20-30 minutes - is this because it is geared towards someone running faster than me? And should I just increase the minutes accordingly? Or is it actually a good idea to do more short runs instead of a few longer ones?

Also if anyone has any experience with the plan please throw in your two cents

Lonnie

Generally, it is better to do more short runs than fewer longer ones.  You'll generally have a lower chance for injury, better quality of workouts and better recovery.

Okay, well I guess I will try to wrap my head around doing very small runs - thanks for the reply

I don't know that plan, but I for this year's IM, I am trying to run more frequently to try to reduce wear and tear on body. Mileage will be about the same as last IM, but spread over 5 running days, rather than 4. So far, the body feels better than last time around, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the results will be.

Good luck on your training.

I struggle with the same thing. I feel like I am supposed to be running longer distances, but my plan has me doing 30-45 min runs, and one long run a week. Thanks for asking the question so I could learn as well!

Using a high-volume schedule for many months is not the best tactic. Build speed and skill several months out, and then transition to a high-volume IM plan.

Spice up your training! Improve your VO2 max and threshold. If you are using this plan during the winter, you can start your specific training in the spring with a nice improvement in your speed.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.
