Bit of a fun little post in light of my struggle this morning.

Alright had a new training PR this morning. Met up with a friend, alongside girlfriend this morning for an early Monday morning 4k swim. Got onto the deck, sat on top of the start block and hung out, goggles went back on forth from on, to set on forehead. Both of the others got in and straight to work, while I sat idle on the block.

Oh the Monday morning struggle can be so real sometimes folks, 25 minutes later I was able to get in. Visual preparation

What is everyone else's longest time sitting on deck?

In all seriousness I am usually business as usual, sometimes even making a good entrance into the water, but today resembled the fear of many swim practices in my younger years just delaying the inevitable.

I'm not a great swimmer, but I am a great poolgetterinner. I don't think I've ever taken more than 5-10 seconds from arriving at the edge of the pool to being in the water. I think it comes from years of jumping off the boat into 65F water to go water skiing. If I stalled there we often ended up in the weeds. Slimy lily pads are definitely less fun than the cold water shock.

For some reason wading into the water is a different thing. I can stand waist deep for hours before I dive in.

Got up at 5:30 this morning... sat on the bed for awhile, decided I'm swimming after work. 12 hour delay?

Nothing too impressive. Until the past year, I've had to train for events up to and including a HIM with a max of 45-50 minutes of pool time, except, during some years, a longer block on Saturday PM. So there's no dallying. My record for going from a staff meeting (on the 4th floor of the opposite building, no less) to swimming in the school pool is 2 minutes and 45 seconds! (Wore suit underneath clothes to the meeting.) It's pretty common for me to chase the last elementary swimmers out (I help coach, so I'm on deck then), take off T-shirt and shorts, put on goggles, and get in. Teacher/coach to athlete in one minute or less. Even now when it's not as rushed (I have a 90 minute window to train), I'm pretty quick. Some of my swimmers and their parents are still hanging around, and like to watch me get started, and I wouldn't be a good example if I sat on deck for 20 minutes!

I suppose this could count as procrastination.....Last year, I pulled out of a tri swim and switched to the du owing to cold water and very rough conditions. I did the tri this year. Water was still miserably cold (well into wetsuit range, but not wetsuit legal, this being SE Asia) but a bit calmer and I felt more confident I could be noticed and get help if I got hypothermic or cramped. So, a one-year delay???

I don't have a record time but many, many times I have sort of wandered around the pool deck at 5:45am wasting time doing pseudo stretches and sort of warming up (windmilling my my arms, etc.) trying to look like I am doing something athletically important while really just trying to work up the mojo to jump into the pool.

Same here. Woke up at 4:45. Rolled over & next thing I know it's 7AM. I thought to myself, "The pool will still be there tomorrow."

24 hour delay.

The pool I use is on the chilly side so I average about 5 mins per swim of agonizing pain staring at the water.  The lifeguards routinely threaten to push me in to end my suffering.

I've been sitting on the deck with my legs in the water and actually bailed on the swim at the point!

I'm a baby when it comes to cold water, so I usually sit on the deck, dangle my legs in, slo-o-o-o-owly ease into the water, splash my arms around a bit, take a few deep breaths... and THEN go under. But I have limited time in the morning, so if I'm getting up that early I'm making it worth my while.

Considering I usually have at most 45 minutes (on a good day 60 minutes) to get my workouts in, I'm the "walk into the pool area, grab my kick board and pull bouy, spit on the goggles and jump in" guy.

Now I have been known to stare off a dock into 60 degree water with my wetsuit on, googles on, Garmin ready to go, and just dread jumping in.  Even to the point when my toes are getting numb.

This is my scenario. Swimming happens during lunch and so not a second can be lost.

Thankfully my pool if fairly warm.

I had the opposite issue last night.  It was windy and 52 degrees when I got to the pool.  After I finished my workout I dreaded getting out and making the run to the locker room.

Unless it's the height of bikini season there isn't usually any reason to linger at the pool. (Even if it is, the gawking is less obvious if you are IN the water...)

If I didn't want to swim I wouldn't go to the pool.

I've found when I feel like that I get in the hot tub for 5 min.

My weekday swims are squeezed into a tight time schedule so I usually just get with it as quick as I can.   I train at an outdoor pool, and during the winter months even here in FL it can be pretty chilly getting from the locker room to the pool deck.  That warm water feels pretty good when you get in.   If anything, I'll linger a bit before getting out when it's cold.

This is my normal routine when I swim in the morning. It's more of a "I hate to get up early" as opposed to "getting into the water". Especially with the winter we just had. It sucks getting out of a nice warm bed and heading out when it's -8 with a -20 wind chill.

- Set Alarm for 0420
- Alarm goes off at 0420, hit snooze 3 - 4 times (my wife hates this!)
- Drive to the YMCA, sit in the parking lot for 3 - 5 minutes
- Go into locker room and change, sit on bench for 1 - 2 minutes
- Go into pool area, grab kickboard and pull buoy. Stand on deck and stare at the water for 2 - 3 minutes.
- Jump in!

We have two rec centers that I swim at. The first also has water aerobics classes so the temperature is relatively warm, I have no problem jumping straight in this one. The second pool, which I use the most, is used purely for lap swimming and they keep the temperature a few degrees colder than the other one, I always take a few minutes to "stretch" before jumping into this pool.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

Does it matter how fast you go? Does it matter if you win? No. It only matters that you tri your best and smile when you cross the finish line.
