45 year old male and I have decent fitness but started training 3 weeks ago for a sprint in Aptos CA this coming August. Horrible at swimming and I hate running but so far so good. I, like so many others I have read, am having a ton of trouble getting breathless while swimming. I think I'm kicking too hard but I can only swim 50 yards and have to stop to catch my breath. Making progress and looking forward to participating on this forum. Happy Monday and you all have a good one.

Welcome!  I resembled you when I started swimming again.  I created the below free plans specifically for the 'can't breath' problem:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?planid=13749 (10 week plan)

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?planid=13743 (20 week)

If you have a plan for the run and bike, you can surely just do the swim portion of this.  Just stick with it and it will get better in a few months.

Let us know if you have any questions.

I had read the articles on BT, I'd trained, and I thought I had prepared. There were, however, a few things that I didn't internalize despite what I'd been told.
