Subject: Strengthening A Busted Leg
Cliff notes: major surgery, need to get some strength back into my legs again. Gym's are fine, but I get bored with the same old mundane exercises. What are some good strengthening moves for legs that wont do too much damage to bad knees?

Thanks!
Stephanie

I personally had ankle surgery in January, and have trained clients after surgery.

Start with body weight exercises.  The best choice of exercises for you will depend on the specifics of your situation, but some options may be:

Balancing on one leg

Single leg squat & reach

Side step lunges

Single leg box/pistol squat

Stability ball hamstring curl

My left leg is significantly shorter than my right by 7mm. For the bike I got an extra shim in my cleat, so I'm wondering if orthotics would be called for in my running shoes?

A strong core will allow you to keep optimal body alignment for whatever you’re doing (swim, bike or run), and this in turn will reduce your fatigue in the long run.
