Lets suppose we all have the all clear from our doctor to use iron supplements if we wish.

Is this not a great way to benefit your self pre-race.

My infant a few years ago went on an iron supplement pre-surgery to help his Hemoglobin and even a two week regime helped his red cell count.

I see no drawbacks. Its perfectly legal. You train 16-20 weeks pre event without the supplement and then add 10 points to your Hg the week of the event.

Off to google to find out if this reasoning is wrong.

A ton about using it as a regular supplement. Esp if I am running super miles or suddenly turn into a very skinny vegan woman. Not much about using it for a race specific boost.

Umm...aside from the obvious health implications of supplementing with something you don't need (and it is possible to have too much iron, with nasty health consequences), anyone who's every taken higher does of iron (for anemia) could tell you that it often upsets the stomach unless you're really careful about when you take it and with what. Not what you want to do before a race. if you want to dope, try caffeine (in legal quantities) instead.

Agreed.

Google hemochromatosis while you are at it.

I don't think you'll see much if any boost in a week if you're not already deficient, and taking iron sucks.

Perhaps you could dope on steak instead.

The whole idea that you can "take something" for a "boost" is bogus.  How about train harder?  Geez.

What the others have said.

Unless you are iron deficient, supplementing will not help. And if you ARE deficient, you will need several weeks at least to notice a difference. Iron doesn't just pop in and carry more oxygen-- your body has to actually create new red blood cells. (And if you are deficient, eating spinach is not going to help.)

Excess iron can cause serious problems so no one should take supplements unless they are deficient.

FTR, I have often struggled with iron deficiencies and I am under doctor's orders to supplement now. I definitely notice when I'm deficient and my performance suffers; my performance improves when I get my levels back up to normal levels. But I can't overdo it. And I would disagree that "taking iron sucks." I take Palefer with vitamin C and have no negative issues.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
