3 disciplines today for me, but not a triathlon: 30min bike commute to 5k parkrun race. 5k parkrun race (25 ' +5' warm up) and 30min swim with my daughter at the pool. We were actually there for over 1hr, but it wasn't all swimming or drills. 1 point only

1 hour on the trainer this morning. First trainerroad workout. I did Carson. It was 7 sweet spot intervals starting at 3 minutes and working up to 7 minutes.

1.5hr bike ride (to and from the running club) and 1hr run with the club this morning. Perfect weather and great company. One of the guys is 60, still works as a carpenter and he just completed his 102nd marathon! He's been doing 6 of them a year on the average, did 3 IMs (11-13hrs) to date and few ultras. Always run with his big dog. Some people.

1 hr on the dreadmill. The real pain came by watching the Lions and Joe Nathan close out the Tigers game. I took a couple of days of to watch my daughters run in a cross country meet on the MSU campus. 2 PRed and the third had her best time of the year.

IMFL Training Camp was awesome. I have ruled out doing IMFL for my first IM. Boring bike course and unpredictable water conditions in the Gulf are two strikes against it for me.

I've always been the skinny kid. 6'3" - 145lbs. That was my weight in April. Stress kills my appetite, my metabolism eats my body... I watched the Boulder Ironman this year and became inspired. I will be an Ironman. I'm already registered for the Boulder Sprint Ironman next June and am trying to plan the Muncie 70.3 into my schedule for next summer. That being said, I'm already back to a healthier weight of 165lbs, thanks to a quality gym membership, and training 10-20 hours a week. My goal weight is 180lbs, but I'm not sure I'll ever get there.

I live in Boulder, CO and i'm going through a divorce. My training has given me something to focus on and a goal to achieve. I have 2 beautiful daughters, 3 & 5, that I miss terribly.

Since high school I haven't played any organized sports or done anything competitive, save for finally running the BolderBoulder 10k this year and last. Last year I ran my heart out to prove a point and I ran a 56:29. That was my first ever timed running event. The first time since my junior year of high school I had intentionally run more than 2 consecutive miles. I was a smoker. This year I had fun, and started enjoying libations just past the first mile. I was DRUNK by the time I finished. And if anyone was there this year and remembers the Guy by the feildhouse giving away extra beer tickets, that was me. My community service... I quite smoking(Cigarettes & Weed) the day after the Boulder Ironman.

I'm originally from SW Ohio. Go Tribe! Go Browns! Go Cavs! Go Pens! I've been in Boulder now for 7 years.

I work in the Hospitality Business and am always on my feet and on the go. The worst job I ever had was at a Hotel Front Desk, I felt trapped in a 4'x12' box. Can't even fathom being in a cubicle.

I'm a good mentee because I won't stop and I recover rapidly.

My training thus far has been base building. Leg Strength and Core Strength. I can still run a sub 60' 10k, sub 27' 5k and have no issues biking 50+ miles, though my bike SUCKS. My biggest training worry is swimming, last week I started swimming laps at the gym. I haven't swum laps since I was a knee high proving to the lifeguards that I should be allowed in the deep end of the pool...

I'm running my first sprint Tri this coming SUNDAY(9-21) @ The Oktoberfest Tri in Longmont, CO

Mitch that's an awesome half - hope to hit that during my race!

Had a great bike/run workout Saturday - tried nutrition based on advise her meaning 300 cals/hr. As I didn't have sports drink or gels used dates/apricots/banana chips and fruit juice mixed with water to achieve 500 calories - all consumed 15mins prior to end of 90 trainer ride (longest yet!). Hit the road for a 30min run and felt great. I'll try this formula again a few times over the next 6wks but using sports products form race; but so far please with results.

this was on the list of first IM for me in distance future but not so sure now; what was boring about the bke course?

I do have questions: How should I prepare my Transition Bags? There is only a single transition area so both bags will be stored at your bike. I'm still rocking an MTB so changing shoes is a non issue, but what else should I be prepared with/for? I plan to have 2btls on my bike, both with accelerade endurance and a pack of clifshots. I'm going to rent a wetsuit(on tomorrows agenda), but what do I do with it once it comes off? Does my bag need to be big enough to stuff a wetsuit into? Or can it get racked where my bike was?

Excited energy is already flowing...


My training so far has been pretty solid, put in my Lunch 10k(1046' gain) today in 1:10:04. Slightly off my usual pace, but I only slept 4.5 hours last night. The joys of Clopening...

First off, welcome to the group Sam. I was in the same place you are now about 6 months ago and this group has been a tremendous asset.

I looked up your race and noticed the Sprint has a 750M swim, which is one of the longest I've seen for a Sprint. You mentioned you just started lap swimming last week and I have to ask if you have attempted an Open Water Swim(OWS). For most first time triathletes the swim is the toughest part to train for and shouldn't be taken lightly. There is no comparing the pool swim to the open water swim and you should try open water before race day.

Since your triathlon is a sprint distance and you have a single transition area, you should be able to set up and transition easily. Each spot gets about 2ft of space, so don't worry about packing and unpacking. Here is what I do. I put my helmet, sun glasses and shirt on my bike. Swim in the shorts you will wear on the bike. They will dry off. At transition, put an old towel on the ground and your shoes next to and behind the towel. Start taking your wetsuit off as you exit the water. Some people take it off in the water because it is easier. Hang your wetsuit on the bike rack. It will dry while you are racing and most transition areas are closed. Only competitors are allowed in, so it won't get stolen. Stand on the towel, put on shirt, sunglasses, helmet and then shoes. Most races will not let you handle your bike unless you are wearing your helmet. Since you are wearing your running shoes on the bike, all you have to do is re-rack your bike when you get back, take off your helmet and run.

As for nutrition on a sprint, there isn't a lot. You will be done in under 2 hours. I would take a gel of some sort 15 minutes before, then one either on the bike or at transition. You probably won't need 2 water bottles on the ride, but if it makes you comfortable, then its fine. I would drink flat coke off of the bike if they offer it. It will take away that cramped feeling getting off of the bike.

Don't worry about your bike, I know plenty of people who have used an MTB on their first. The tires on the road bike will give you an additional 2 mph. On my first, I used an old 10 speed that I bought at a garage sale for $15.00. If you aren't sure or don't want to spend the cash, check the local St. Vincent's or paper. There are thousands of 10 speed bikes taking up space and collecting dust in garages. My second bike was given to me by a client, it was a racing bike from 1989, complete with toe clips.

If you think you are excited now, just wait until Friday night rolls around.

Some additional thoughts - (1) I swim with my jersey on under my wetsuit. Putting a shirt on over a wet body is tough. (2) Make sure you get a swim in with the wetsuit before the race. NEVER try anything you haven't done before on race day. (3) Go with one bottle on the bike. Don't overload the nutrition. You need at most two gels for the entire race. As Jim said, one before the swim and maybe one on the bike. Nothing on the run or at transition from bike to run.

Sam,

A big welcome. We all had to do our first tri. One thing you will learn quickly is that there are multiple answers to most questions. My two cents for what it's worth:

1) Use a plastic Walmart type bag over your feet to get the wetsuit on easily. Swim in that wetsuit ahead of time. There is a tendency for people to panic and feel claustrophobic if they are not used to it. You don't have to swim long, just get used to the skin tight feeling. Be sure to let some water in at the neck. And make sure to pull it up to your crotch so you are not getting strangled at the neck.

2) If at anytime during the swim you get tired or out of breath, it is perfectly acceptable to flip over on your back or even hold on to a kayak as long as you don't go forward.

2) I would take two bottles on the bike, just in case one gets accidentally launched.

3) Practice your transitions if you haven't already.

4) Do not focus on a time goal for your first one. Relax, savor the event, you will replay it many times over.

5) Don't forget to report back on your experience. We will be waiting with baited breath.

BTW, divorce sucks and I think everyone loses weight. After this race is over (NOT BEFORE), you may want to try something like CarboPro for added calories.

Flat, constant pedaling on some busy roads, no great scenery as opposed to, for example, Louisville which goes by Churchill Downs. i did talk to someone at the tri-club meeting tonight and they did remind me that with 2000 other riders, it might not be so boring ;-)

Sam - FWIW I did my first season on my MTB using smooth tires - everyone passed me on fast looking road bikes - think of it as strength training so when you get your road bike you'll pass everyone else!

cant add anymore than above but must emphasize - this is your first race, enjoy it! - there will be many more where you can keep on improving; after three years I still am!

Got in a 45 minute spin class and 35 minutes in the pool today... I'm guessing that the 60min PT session doesn't count since it wasn't swimbikerun focused... Last hard day this week.

I'll enjoy it. I'm sure I'll go hard, but still enjoy it.
