I haven't checked those sites yet, but I will be sure to do so.

Ellen,

There is a lot of value from a HR monitor. Knowingyour HR will allow you to train smarter. It will allow you to monitor your effort level to ensure that you are working out hard enough but not too hard. I will try to find a link to a thread or two that discuss the importance of HR training. Others here will chime in on the Maffetone method of HR training that is very easy to figure out and very effective as you begin your endurance addiction.

Using HR and Maffetone method are a great way to start training. You don't have to start with a $500.00 HR GPS watch. Buy something low end just make sure it has a chest strap and give you a constant HR. The basic formula is 180-age= MAF maximum HR during training or maximum aerobic function. That is why when Jackie had a birthday I congratulated her on losing a heartbeat, you can't tell her age by looking at her, so don't try. If you have been training less than 2 years, injured or ill -2 more. If you have been training more than 2 years +5. Do this alone for the first 90 days, then add in speed work. "The Big Book of Endurance Training" was written by Maffetone. Its a good place to start your training. I will admit that he mixed some BS and ego into the book. He gets a little hokey with nutrition. I took what I liked from it, and left the rest. The big thing for me is I was able to train and increase millage without injury. I was having a real issue with Achilles Tendonitis, prior to starting this method.

I looked into monitors a bit yesterday, and I must admit it was a little overwhelming. Thanks for the advice, now I'll know what to look for. =)

And I get to add my first session to the list! I won't be able to update for the next week since I'll be camping with my family.

What's your budget? I'm sure we can give you some suggestions.

Awesome job Gabe - glad I was proven wrong nice PR. The wind looked awful. I did see that Caroline Wozniacki ran a 3:26 with no run longer than 13 miles. Guess that is the advantage of being a world class tennis player at age 24.

Adding in Sunday and Tuesday workouts.

So I am starting to plan my 2015 race calendar. I'm feeling much better and think that by the end of the year, I should be ready for a good and healthy 2015. Problem is I have said that same thing for the last 2 yrs and have been injured. What's the collective wisdom of the team - baby steps (ie, sign up for short races and see how it goes) or big steps (ie throw on some HIMs or possibly an IM)?

Feedback appreciated.

Joe - I think I'd start with baby steps and then adjust accordingly depending on how your body is doing. I think you're getting to a really good place now but no sense taking a step back if you rush back too fast.

If you're like me you plan on staying active and racing events for years to come. The main goal should always be our health. My wife often asks why I can't be happy with fitness with overall health as a goal. It's hard to recognize that sometimes our race and competitive goals can actually be detrimental to our overall health. Honestly, I shouldn't have ran my recent HM. It set my running back at least 4 weeks, maybe 6. Take your time with regard to racing. Training is easy to hold back paces and efforts...

LOL. What do they say...the older we get the wiser we get? Honestly, I'm torn most of the time. So many things I want to do on my fitness bucket list. No time to accomplish them all at this stage in my life. I'm starting to settle on the slow burn to achieve my goals. I don't recall your background, but for me, not having been an athlete growing up makes this all a challenge. My fitness/athletic life really began at age 37. It takes years to build a fitness base and on older ligaments, etc. it takes even longer.

I think you ultimately know yourself best. You have to ensure that you listen to your body which I think you are doing a better job of than anyone in this group. try out some shorter races and then make a decison on the longer stuff mid-year. That sounds very sensible.

Thanks all for your messages and I will post soon a RR for my Marathon

Mark Z, congrats on signing up for a tough trail Ultra, very inspiring. So much so, that I just contacted the organizing team for the Marathon Des Sables (one of the toughest Ultras on the planet, 240k, 6 days through the Saharan Dessert) to try to get a slot for 2016 :-)

Joe, I probably will go against the current here, but if you feel better I would shoot for big steps and measure my progress along the way.  That is what I did after coming out from my ITB injury and went through a HM and Full Marathon in the last two months.  Fortunately it all worked out well for me and can now plan to make up for 1-2 Full IM's next year.  But that's just me (and now I need to clear subtlety my races with my wife :-)

Jackie, how is your taper going, are you going nuts yet?

Adding 1 marathon Sunday and 1hr recovery drainer today

Gabe, this is insane! I love it!!! Nothing like a crazy race to motivate us. I have read about the Marathon Des Sables some time ago in Lisa Tamati's book. You will have a story and half to tell after you come back.

Joe, I'm with Gabe here. I would also plan a long and crazy event. You can always take it easy if it causes injury, you are in control. For me it's hard to get motivated by baby steps.

Joe- My 2 cents. It is November and you won't have a longer race until April or May. That is 6 months to build up your fitness. I would start slow and build a solid base. If you focus the first three months on just building endurance and then start adding speed you will have the fitness to do any distance you want. Since you have a lot of time, if something feels wrong scale back to a light week and start building again.

Adding in last night's SF - The Wretched. Only 49' long this one packs a wallop. 35' of hill climbs accompanied by great TdF video, which may be fav as you get race to with Jens, Cadel, the Schlecks, Contador, etc.

Hi everyone! Great job on the recent race results and fitness improvements!

I wanted to gloat from my recovery/off season - so far only 30 minutes of each S/B/R and I feel great.

looking forward to start some off season maintenance programs and enjoy the colder weather.

Might even throw in some yoga ...

Jackie - I am getting excited for you - cant imagine what you're feeling!!

I have been with Trainerroad since it was in beta (and still only pay about $5 month since I was in so early) and the product is an absolute home run. Easy to use and the team there has really expanded content. For the money there's probably no better indoor bike training tool out there other than getting a decent trainer.

When I'm not injured I do most of riding indoors seeing as the weather typically sucks or its pitch black when I am cycling. Indoor training is tedious, but it is highly efficient for triathlon training. No wasted time at stop lights and no coasting. It also is good mental practice. Indoor cycling is not a replacement for hill climbs, pack riding or improving your handling skills, but it will help you tune up the engine. Also, it is really good for doing drills like one leg pedaling and working on form. The Sufferfest vids help with boredom as does a good movie or binge watching a good cable series.

C'mon Dennis - join the darkside.
