There are literally hundreds of different lights available. Niterider is the "big brand" (similar to Polar in HRM's). Here's a link to some reviews and articles on light systems:

Good luck in your search.

I know people who do night time single track mountain bike rides where lights are very important.

They always suggest 2 lights, one on the bike that shines ahead of you and the second one being a headlamp(like people use for running) or mounted to your helmet. so you have a light that lights up what your looking at. Also its nice to have a backup, riding at night when your battery dies would be scary.

I commute for my miles and have gone through few till I found these:
Cygolite metro in the front and Cygolite Hotshot in the back. Both use the same USB plug and are daylight visible (bright as hell) and both have multiple light modes.

I'm a fan of the Cygolite Expilion. They are very bright, have many modes and come with a helmet and bar mount. Many of my rides start in the early morning and the light is great. They also make a bright rear light. Both are self-contained and rechargeable.

I use this on all my night and early morning rides. It can light up the path for easily 30-70' depending on the angle you have it. The battery pack is big, some people put in their jersey pocket (which you have to unplug from the light each time you get off the bike since the light is mounted on the bike somewhere). I use the supplies velco and throw it on my aero bar or handle bar out of the way. It's big and heavy, but I feel very safe with it. Cars see my for miles, and I can also see all the squirrles, rabbits, a hog (one morning) and other things I need to be wary of when riding very early. I'd say a charge lasts a good 2-3 hours on highest power.
