I have!  When it is adjusted correctly (tight around the smallest part of the waist) I don't feel the water on my back and there is no rubbing/chafing from the straps.  I really like it and can't wait to do higher mileage and really put it to use!  I could see taking it hiking or doing other outdoors things in the future as well.

Half marathon done....started well, first half was great but man, the second half hurt. Slowed down a lot nursing my knees, finished without incident but a little disappointed. Report here:   http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Congrats Anna! Nice job listening to your body and slowing down. You may have avoided several weeks off running or cycling since you were smart.

Thanks Mike. Yes, now I've had a day to think about it I think wimping out was the right decision. A day or two just swimming and I'll be back to running (hopefully) with no lasting issues. Onward and upward!

Gary, What a breathtaking picture! Looks like a beautiful place to train.

Anna, I agree with Mike, you have to listen to your body. I'm glad the first part of your half went well, and hope you are back on the road soon!

I hope everyone (in the US) had a wonderful 4th of July weekend, and everyone not in the US had a wonderful weekend as well! I went to Hersheypark on Friday (it's always way less crowded on the 4th of July), and then did some boating Saturday. The weather was perfect both days!

I've been pretty lazy this last week, taking a break from training, but it's starting to get to me and I plan on getting back to it this week. It's amazing how long it takes to build up your strength and endurance, and how quickly it goes away when you take a break.

I just read your report. Great job! Just doing the race counts as a notch in the mental toughness belt. Maybe weight training will help the knees? I dunno, that's what people have said to me. Let us know how they feel in the coming days!

Gary - Nice photo.  Looks very calm.  I hope your knee is okay.

I went to swim yesterday but after 200m I headed for shore.  The waves were lifting me up, tossing me around and back down again.  Some waves were washing over my head and I was swallowing lots of water.  I knew that in a race I'd just have to tough it out but I just didn't feel like swimming another 1700m or so of the big waves.

I'm going back tomorrow for a swim and a run but we're in a heat wave for us (up to 38C/100F) so I'll run at 6:30am while it is still cool.

Question - This Sunday is my GranFondo.  The forecast is for it to be very uncomfortably hot.  I'm praying for no wind but there will be very little shade and no clouds at all, for the whole 160km.  Any suggestions on coping with the heat?  I know I'll be drinking lots of water and perpetuem (maybe aim for 2 bottles per hour one of water and the other perp.).

lots of water day BEFORE the hot ride.  preferably also zero alcohol.  i got nothing else, but i know that hydration on a hot day takes a lot more than just that day.

Going to ortho today for eval of the knee.

Bad triathlon dreams last night! I went from the swim right to the run, skipping the bike. Did not realize until half way through the run when I saw no runners and only bikers! I decided to pull out of the race and just go back to the beginning for a leisurely swim, but then I realized I was late for work! At least I was dressed! What does this all mean? Anyone else have any triathlon nightmares to share?

Drop ice down the shorts and shirt at aid stations. Consider buying arm coolers if you can find them on shirt notice. They are like are warmers for winter but you poor water on them and they help cool you. I haven't bought a pair yet but I haven't done a gran fondo yet either.

:-) I do. Here is a dream I had before my first HIM in New Orleans.

I don't remember (or didn't dream about the swim portion) and not much of the bike except coming in to T2 at which time I realized, oh no, I forgot to eat or drink on the bike! That's right, ~4 hours in to the race with nothing. I was surprised I hadn't bonked yet and knew I would soon, so at T2 I stuffed all the food I was supposed to eat into the pockets of my tri shorts, and headed out on the run, for the first time. I got about 10 steps outside T2, which was in a building???, and turned around to grab a water bottle then headed back out. This time when I got to the door, I realized I was wearing a jacket and long sleeve shirt which was too hot for the run so I turned around and took them both off, I couldn't figure out where to shove them so I got in line at coat check (lol) but that was taking too long so I went back to my bike and handed them to my sister (what the heck is she doing in New Orleans?). Then I turned around to leave and realized I don't want to run with no shirt on and as I'm getting the shirt on realize I need my number belt which is buried in my tri bag. Anyway, finally off to the run, now having blown any chance at a sub 6 hour HIM, and a couple hundred feet into the run I realize, I'm not wearing any shoes! What the heck, now I'm getting angry. I contemplate running the 13.1 miles barefoot and quickly realize that is a bad idea. When I turned around, my sister is there laughing (that's what she was doing in my dream, big meany :-)). I woke up as I was heading back to T2 to get my shoes. Funny stuff.

I've had others where I get to T1 and realize I forgot to rack my bike after frantically going row by row looking for it and figure out it's still in my car.

Marilyn, Miche and Mike - I knew hydration is important but I forgot about extra hydrating before the race day.  Thanks for that info and the suggestion of icing along the route.  The lady that runs the GranFondo said today they've added another AID station due to the heat we're expecting.  I figure I'll have about 3 hours in the worst of the heat and it will be baking hot!  Once I pass about 72km the rest of the race is 100% shade free.  Not a single tall tree along the entire route.  I'll definitely use ice as best I can.

Gary - I don't think I've ever dreamed of triathlons but I have dreamed similar to Mike's frustrating dream where you just can't seem to get something done.

Had a good run and swim today but I'll be taking it easy until Sunday from now.
