Pre-race routine:

Up and out of the house early. Way too early. I didn't realize the race start was set back since the swim was cancelled. So my usual routine of getting to the race site early back-fired a bit. I was there way too long before my wave went. Quite chilly and just never felt like I'd warmed up until mid-run. I think I also had too much coffee with messed with my stomach. Luckily the waiting help this pass.
Event warmup:

Just a bit of movement to keep warm.

Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

The race started at the swim start with athletes running about 100 yards into the transition area to get their bikes. Two at a time in a time trial start. I passed my bike and didn't get into my shoes very well.
What would you do differently?:

Remember where my bike is!

Comments:

The bike segment went pretty well. I've been training on hills and this time I was not gasping for breath after most of the hills. It too me a very, very long time to feel like I had warmed up my legs. Even my feet felt chilled for awhile. I wore my trisuit w/ a long-sleeve top over it. In hindsight, I think I should have worn tights. Fun bike route. Pavement was terrific given the winter. Could not have asked for a better road surface.

Good bike effort.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I think I rode the bike segment pretty smart. Maybe should have worn tights.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Not one of my speedier transitions. Didn't quite get the race belt on right. Next time will run with race belt out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Do a couple of dry runs @ home.
Run

Comments:

Surprised by my time. Much better than I anticipated given my run training. Finally started feeling warm during the run. Decided to power walk the bigger hills. For me, this is a smart decision.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This was a good run segment for me.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, training, training! Did not get in the running that I probably should have. Both the bike and run should improve given my Saturday morning group ride and my Thursday morning track workouts. I'd been a bit spotty on the group rides and the track workouts just started in April. I've had to miss two of them.

Event comments:

I'm very, very pleased with my effort. Based on how tired and stiff I was on Sunday and Monday, I know that I put in a really good effort.

This was a very well run race. Especially given the uncertainty surrounding the takeover of the race by UCF from TriColumbia. Volunteers terrific. Great course.

Will probably sign up again!
