As soon as winter arrives I struggle with tight calves and longer runs are a no no. I wear skins and stretch and warm up, but still after 7 or 8 kms they start getting tight. Do I just need to stretch more?

maybe.

but I'm thinking that getting some deep tissue/sports massage work might be the ticket.  You might have a lot of just tight scar tissue from overtraining built up in there that needs to be broken up.  Calves are tough, dense muscles.   Could require alternative therapies such as ART?

Or, I could be completely wrong... but it would be something easy to try.

I've been struggling with tight calves as well as the training load has built up.  A couple of weeks ago I searched various forums for advice and one pointed me to self massage and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1hTLpnS6vA) video.  Been using it multiple times a day and seems to be doing a pretty good job of loosening things up.  Might be worth a try.

I will be interested to see if the massage helps. My body responds horribly to cold weather. I am slower, don't get the endorphin rush from cold weather running, hate it, hate it as do my tight calves. this even though I do regularly do massages

Are you kidding? Cold weather in Western Australia? We manage in -20C and colder. Just wear a better pair of tights.

As I was pulling my wetsuit off while standing in the water, my left calf cramped such that my foot was pointed, the muscle was rock hard, and I could not pull my foot out of point for 30 seconds.

Deep calf pain can be a tricky problem to deal with, and it’s appropriate that you are paying attention to this pain before it becomes a more debilitating injury.

Calf pain can have multiple causes. In your case, the most likely cause seems to be from a calf muscle strain. If you have had Achilles problems you can be predisposed to a calf injury.

When I was only a runner, I didn't have this issue. But now, going into my third year as a triathlete, my calves and occasionally my Achilles are tight and painful throughout most of my mileage.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
