well 4x100 is 4 sets of 100m consecutively

1:10 is a time marker - not sure if you meant that in relation to the 4x100 or not

Welcome to the sport!

4 x 100 on 1:10 would mean 4 repetitions of 100 yards/meters on a 1 minute 10 second interval (that sounds really fast btw)

That is fast. The 1:10 would mean that you have 1:10 to swim the 100. If you do it in 1:00 you have earned :10 seconds to rest before the next 100.

Whats a good work out for a beginner to bring up her endurance? It seems kicking makes me the most tired

Thank yoU!

I HATE kicking drills with a passion, but I can't deny that they help...when I did my half iron last week, the plan had my roughly upping my swim distance about 200-250yds/m a week and then dropping back slightly 1 out of every 4 for a "recovery week"

this is the training program I used - and at the bottom of the ilnk there are swim workouts: http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms/tno_HIM.asp

i.e.
Warm-up # 1 ........................300 yds
16 x 50s sw -10" bet. ea. .....800 yds - 16x 50yds with 10 secs rest between
150 swim down real easy ....150 yds
Total ...................................1250 yds

Warm-up # 1
200 sw, 50 k, 50 sw ...............300 yds

If the set is 4 x 100 on 1:10 yes, you earned 10 seconds. you will sometimes see 4 x 100 @ :10, that is 10 seconds rest regardless of the time you swim, I am a huge fan of 100's you can do a lot with both speed work and stroke development.

Pyramid or ladder sets are great for pure speed, to make gains you need to find your limit and press it, you want to be slightly uncomfortable.

What is your background with swimming?  That will help a bit with recommendations.

I speak Swimmer:

To me, this would mean ten repetitions of 50 meters/yards "swim" (as opposed to "kick," "pull," or "drill"), with 10 seconds rest between each one.
