Overall Rank = 91/146

Age Group Rank = 9/12
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 and had oatmeal at home, stopped at hardee's for coffee and a chicken biscuit on the way (on a 1.5 hour drive). After I got my packet and set up transition, drank some gatorade and ate a banana, then watched the olympic swim.
Event warmup:

Swim
  • 09m 55s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started myself in the front of the pack and got swum over a TON. Never really drafted but held a pretty direct line from start to finish. Was difficult getting into a rhythm, for me a pretty terrible swim. I just don't like being in with everyone....can never seem to get used to it.
What would you do differently?:

Swim training. OWS/group practices.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

This was a great T1, I was able to run all the way through and just get moving.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!

Comments:

For me - a perfect bike ride. I realized as I was turning left on a slight downhill as I tried to brake I couldn't - dumb me didn't check that the brake calipers were CLOSED before leaving transition before the race. I reached down and grabbed the front one while riding, tried to get the rear but couldn't and figured I'd chance it. This was a bad call. While riding I drank plenty of water and besides the one early hill I rarely struggled. Passed a LOT of riders, that always feels good and never happens for me. Enjoyed every minute out there.
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING!
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

So...as I dismounted I fell. I think because of the brake issue, I didn't stop as quickly as I expected to and was just moving too fast and went down as I tried to hop off before the dismount line. Which wouldn't be a big deal, but I definitely twisted my right ankle the way I fell. Decided I'd run and see what happened, forgot my race number, luckily another athlete reminded me to get it and I was on my way. By now it was HOT.
What would you do differently?:

Close and check brakes, duh!
Run
  • 32m 54s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 35s  min/km
Comments:

It was HOT at this point. The first half mile my right ankle was KILLING ME. KILLING. Then it got numb and I just plodded through the run. Walked all the water stops to get enough water in me. All said, not a bad run, it's the best I can do on 75 degrees in direct sun!
What would you do differently?:

Not fall off my bike and sprain my ankle? Despite the ankle and the heat - this is a great 5k time for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a crab cake, drank a beer, sat in the shade down by the water to relax a bit. Tied up my ankle to get some compression on it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Falling off my bike! AHHH!! Lack of swim training.

Event comments:

Beautiful venue, beautiful weather, this was a great last minute decision race and one I would make again :)

Except for the discomfort of crowded swimming, bike mechanical issues, and bad ankle sounds like it was good fun. Oustanding effort all things considered. Post race sounds like nirvana.

Great report! Sucks about the ankle. I'm guessing your brake calipers were open because you had opened it to put your tire back on but then never closed?

Great bike time and run time! With that run time, I was expecting your AG ranking for the run would be much higher. There must have been some speed demons out there in your AG.

All told, sounds like a great race experience. Crab cakes and beer? Where do I sign up? Beats the usual fare. Yum!

Hope the ankle heals up pretty quickly.

Finishing the race on a sprained ankle is hard-core.  Just to be clear on internal versus external motivation, did you have to finish the race to be eligible for the crab cakes and beer?

Holy smokes, hope the ankle is Ok!  The brakes is a scary, scary thing, too!!

Sounds like you had a blast, though, so that's gotta make everything all right... right?

Dude... you got swum over, didn't open your brake calipers, had an over 17mph average, sprained your ankle and STILL kept going!  Bad-AZZ!!

I totally need to find a race that has crab cakes as post race food.

Great job!!! Great bike pace! And, yeah, you must have had some speedy runners in your AG. (Can't believe how easy that swim is compared to the oly distance!) Hope you don't pay too badly for running on that ankle.

Awesome race! I'm a wimp when it comes to full contact swimming so I usually start last. That's scary about the brake calipers and sucks about the sprained ankle. You powered through all of it and did a great job!

Very nice race and report Marilyn.  Glad you had a good time in spite of being swum over and falling.  Hopefully, your ankle will recover quickly.

I guess I've been lucky in my swims so far.  Nothing worse than having my ankles grabbed and I'm pretty certain those were all accidental and they just made me swim faster.

Sorry to hear about the ankle, but it sounds like you powered through it with a nice run time!
