I'm doing this ride in 2.5 weeks. My training has been ok, I know I can complete it, and I am doing it with my father. This ride is a present to himself for his 62nd b-day, which is that day.

Not me but my co-worker is. He is planning on riding his fixed gear which i am not certain is within the rules. He's been riding this bike for years and casually rides 80+ to century rides on it...It blows my mind!

I don't think there are any rules to what you ride...it's not a race.

I'm not doing it this year, but every year I do I've seen someone riding an old Schwinn Sting-Ray.

I have a road bike with aero bars, will they let me have the bars, or should I take them off?

I just read this morning... No aerobars. No headphones.

I think single speed would be OK... crazy, but within the rules.

Ya, no TT bikes or aero bars. Having said that.... you still see people with aero bars. You don't see too many people on them though. And same for head phones... you still see people wearing them. I always wear head phones.... but in a ride like that, I followed the rules. It's a big ride, and lots of activity. So I played safe.

Have you seen the weather forecast? 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms. Yuck!

It's almost a guarantee to get wet. The year I did it the Saturday folks got hammered at the end of the day. And of course it was cold and Sun setting. They looked pretty miserable. I got wet the next day. Does not take much in the mountains. Bring rain/warm gear. The descents get really cold.

Kathryn...what a bummer! I just posted a long comment on your race report blog and it didn't publish!
I'm 60 now and did this ride 7 years ago. So both you and your dad are awesome. We had perfect weather. I live in Boise so had plenty of climbing in training but hard to get much above 7000ft elevation. The only real issue I had was an altitude headache which finally went away at Loveland with Ibuprofen. I've done lots of ultra rides and I did have an interesting thing happen that I have not experienced before, even though I have been pretty hypothermic on some other rides over the years. I was dressed pretty warm coming down off of Squaw Pass becsue it was pretty cold early a.m. On the way down my bike started vibrating. I stopped 3 times and found nothing wrong. I finally realized it was me shaking from the cold!
As you said the scenery was awesome. I was actually able to call my wife from the top of Loveland Pass!
Since you like challenging rides, if you are not familiar with "The Death Ride" in Marleeville, CA, you need to check it out. Probably the most difficult and epic ride I have done. Your dad will love it.
Well done Kathryn...congrats....Tom
