I squeaked to the finish in just less than 7 hours. I felt good on the swim, struggled on the hills and rough roads but still finished the bike in one piece, and felt good enough on the run that I was able to actually run the whole thing, even though it was very hot and humid by then. In all, a great first 70.3! Thanks for all your kind words!

Congratulations! That was a TOUGH course! The run has got to be one of the more challenging 70.3 courses in our area.

I had to pick my son up from scouts so my dog and I were cheering people on around Bostwick Lake on Belding road while we waited. So much bike porn!

Those hills on the run combined with the heat were killer! Glad to have that race under my belt now. Hopefully everyone had the race they were hoping for!

I ate and drank a lot on the bike and took a throwaway bottle of Gatorade with me on the run, which I really think helped a lot. Plus I took advantage of every kid with a squirt gun and neighbor with a hose, ha! I was surprised to see so many people struggling. It was tough.

Looks like 15 people finished -- I counted 13 people in the program. Results here.

And then I saw it. I got to "The Hill." It looked a bit innocent really, in reflection - just a little hill, with the road bending around to the left...

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

I’m terrified of biking hills and the triathlon I am registered for has several hills…on AND off road!! I’m willing to do whatever it takes to finish this triathlon. Any guidance?

A better bike is not the answer to meeting your performance goals. I mean if you gave Nike running shoes to a tortoise would he move any faster?
