Cycling around West Point?

I'd love to here from anyone who cycles around West Point without the benefit of being in the Army. My Army ID expired almost 20 years ago... One of my standard routes goes over Storm King via rt 218, then I get on 9W south to the Bear Mt. Bridge. Its probably 6-7 miles on 9W. I'm looking for a way to minimize time spent on 9W as it scares the pants off of me between the too-fast traffic, gravel, and potholes in this area. I've tried going out Rt 293 but couldn't find any roads to cut back over towards Ft. Montgomery that wasn't restricted to military personnel. If you have any info, thanks!
