Door Country Triathlon

Sunny
Total Time = 6h 15m 49s
Overall Rank = 496/814
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 17/38
Pre-race routine:

Bagel and cream cheese, water, and transition set up.
Event warmup:

Nope. I keep all my nervous energy for the race.
Swim
  • 43m 13s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a pretty competitive group. There was never really a stretch out of competitors. We were all pretty much on top of one another. Got my goggles kicked to the side, my ankles pulled and my butt smacked. No worries. I'd just pop my head up and redirect.
What would you do differently?:

Do some interval training in the pool. I always swim one speed. Happy with this time since my goal was 45 minutes and the total time includes running up the ramp to the timing matt after utilizing the very nice wetsuit stripper.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

I took time to sit down and dry my feet so I could put my socks on. I should've put my gloves on in T1 but opted to do it on the bike. That slowed me down a bit. In the end it doesn't matter cuz it would've been time in Transistion as opposed to the bike. Slammed a 5 hour energy drink before heading out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Bike
  • 3h 05m 19s
  • 56.3 miles
  • 18.23 mile/hr
Comments:

So extremely very happy with this ride. I set a goal of 3.5 hours and smoked it. Played tag with a girl til mile 38 and then she was gone. Talked to everyone I passed and encouraged them all. Said thanks to as many volunteers as possible. A couple of hills slowed me down as well as some pretty rough roads. Looked for Donkey's on the ride and saw Peter, Scott, Shristy and Clint. Drank 24 oz of water, 24 oz of Perp, ate a handful of peanut butter m&m's and a granola bar. My gut was very sloshy.
What would you do differently?:

Have my derailleur tweeked before the race. I was missing two gears today. It all worked out though.
Transition 2
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

I don't have the quick laces so I had to sit down again to tie my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Speedlaces.
Run
  • 2h 22m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Plan was 8:2 for the entire race. Don't start to fast. In fact I walked from transition to the finish shoot before I started to run. Got some fluids in and some granola. I took the run every 8 minutes at a time. Very happy with this effort considering the sun and those two hills that I don't believe ANYONE could run up. Stuffed ice down my shorts every chance I could get. I think that saved my quads. I also ran through every mister, sprinkler or hose that was out there. Kept talking to people as I passed to keep my mind from going to a dark place and kept smiling. Two GU's , three or four cups of gatorade and tons of water kept me going. Mile 12 was a welcome sight with their popsicles and coke. Didn't care for the coke though. Yuck. Rounding the bend to head to into the last .5 mile and I see Clint in the med tent. I freaked out for a minute until he made me realize he was waiting for me so we could cross the finish line together. MAJOR BROWNIE POINTS. Love that man.
What would you do differently?:

I honestly don't know.
Post race
Warm down:

Took my shoes off and sat in the lake. Ahhhhhhhh

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat.

Event comments:

I don't know if I'll do the half again, but I'd come back for the sprint or the half relay.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
