Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? Wanted your opinions on this. I got hit by a car on 5/3, 12 weeks ago, while on a century charity ride (Tour de Cure). Just Wednesday I was able to do squats for the first time and do child's pose for the first time. I tested the trainer this morning and I can finally get on it without pain, so I figure swimming is a go (I couldn't swim without pain 2 weeks ago). I can run 20 minute miles without pain but being able to squat and get on the trainer I should be able to very soon. Assuming I can do everything Monday (swim, get on the trainer, run at my 10-12 minutes per mile pace), is a Half Ironman in 10 weeks from Monday including race week crazy? It's already paid for. I was in excellent shape before the accident. I've been back at the gym with extremely modified workouts for a couple of weeks now, i.e. squats holding on to a wall, spin at half speed, 20 minutes per mile hour runs, etc. Try to go for it with a full training schedule, or continue taking it easy for a few more weeks? |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? By the way it's been paid for since February, so that's the only reason I would do it, since I was already registered. So the main question is, could it be detrimental to jump back into full training as soon as physically able or could this cause health problems down the line. Edited by GatorDeb 2014-07-24 11:50 PM |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? Is it worth doing? What long-term health risks are you accepting to race in the condition you are in? What is your motivation to race other than you've already paid the registration? You can contact the RD about rolling your entry over to another race. While they "official" policy may be no, you're giving them enough advance notice and a compelling reason so they might agree. (Maybe offer to volunteer this year if they'll roll you over to next year?)

Tried running and still pain so still at 20 mins per mile until pain's gone. So far I have been doing what I can without pain, so nothing I have done so far has caused pain. I AM improving on a weekly basis. |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? given the extent of your injuries, this is really a question for your doc/physical therapist. is 10 weeks enough time for a person with a decent base to do a HIM? maybe. for a person that is recovering from getting hit by a car? really hard to say but my gut says no. i'm only recovering from an ankle sprain and doubting my ability to run a sprint in 6 weeks...
but i will gladly watch this thread progress because it is sure to make my work day fly by Edited by mehaner 2014-07-25 7:12 AM |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? It's mostly just a hematoma on my right behind. An injury massage therapist said it appeared I bruised the bone and not the muscle which is why it hurts. Weeks 1-2 = No sitting, no work, laid in bed on left side, no laying on back. Week 3 = was able to sit and go to work albeit in extreme pain. Week 7 = was able to lay on back and wear jeans again. Week 10 = spin at half speed, 20 minute miles running, modified bodypump, 2.5 lbs on each side, holding on to walls for squats and lunges. Now, 3 months later = can squat, still hurts to run, the trainer barely causes pain, have not tried swimming since two weeks ago but I'm a 2:30/100m swimmer (2:15/100m with buoy) and with buoy, 3:45/100m, breathing only on my right, no kicking off the wall, I was still in extreme pain. Hurts if I run any faster than 20 mins per mile. Able to go a little harder on the spin bike but I have still yet to put a workout on the trainer so I don't know if after 5 minutes it would hurt. Just sitting on it causes barely any pain now. |

Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? Follow the doctors orders or as best you can and re-evaluate every week. I would suggest keeping good notes on your workouts and how your body is feeling and go over them with the professionals you have taking care of you. Good Luck Deb. |

928 | Subject: RE: Need advice: HIM in 10 weeks? Sorry to hear about your accident, but I am glad you are recovering. Given where you are now, it seems 10 weeks is a bit too soon. If I were you I'd just do what I could and not force it. Your body might surprise you, or you might need to take it very easily. Take it week to week. At this point you wouldn't make the swim cutoff but you should get that back pretty quickly- I'd be more worried about cycling because of the set body position. |
