My 7 year old son qualified for a regional championship with an 18 second 25Y freestyle...seems pretty fast, no? I'm one heck of a proud papa. This kid is going to kick my butt.

That's pretty fast for a little guy.  Congrats to him.

Awesome!

So how early can they start swim lessons? I want to get my 2 year old in the pool.

We have a pool at our house so we put all of our kids in the water really early, mostly for safety reasons.  They could all dogpaddle across it by the time they were 3.  I don't know how early they can take "lessons", but they can be taught pretty easily to stay on top of the water.

We tried swim lessons with the two older kids from when they were 3 and 4, but nothing took, stopped for several months. We took them back at age 5 and 6 and both picked it up immediately. There is a summer swim team at the pool we belong to, mostly for fun but still has good practices and meets, no emphasis on winning, more camaraderie and building interest. By being around older kids who could swim, they started getting really good almost overnight - my 6 year old can even pull off a butterfly. As a result, the 3 year old has taught himself to doggy paddle and can flutter kick around well enough, all from mimicking his older siblings. I think they get everything from that, not as much from the lessons unless there are better swimmers doing it with them. I'd look for a local aquatic club and just sign them up as young as they'll let you.

I laughed when you said he was going to kick your butt. I think he can probably kick mine right now.

He's WAY more athletic than his old man. He runs beautifully, also plays hockey like he was born to...can't wait til he and the others can ride roadies so I can disappear with them for days.

I taught for over 11 years, started them as young as 6 months. Keep it perspective with respect to their age, your generally not going thave a 2 year old swimming freestyle the length of a pool. However at that age you can teach them toroll over in the water and float on their back(huge for safety purposes).

I did have kids as young a maybe 4 swimming freestyle(front crawl) relatively well.

Most importantly teach them safety rules around the pool and keep it fun.

Pretty good IMO. That said plenty of top swimmers start at little older and progress quickly. My son swims 31 for 25 metre Free he is 7 as well. The top 7 year old in our Region does 19-20 for 25 m and he is huge compared to my son. His 4 year old brother is a big kid too.

Encouragement and age appropriate development are the most important things.

I love those scaled down road bikes, but the only ones I've seen have small wheels and frames, but then they expect kids to use full sized brakes and shifters with their tiny hands. Some (maybe even the one pictured) have full size handlebars with way too wide of a grip.

My son has been asking for one, maybe for next tri season. He's ten and I think he can just now grip the brakes on the one we saw at the store.

ETA: I posted without looking up that Moda Minor. Actually has smaller shifters and brakes. Not sure we've looked into that one before... Hmmm....

I don't really strength train (because I never have and don't really know much about it) and feel like my lack of upper body strength is the reason why I'm not getting faster.

Despite what most runners and their coaches believe, technique plays an enormous role in sustained fast running.
