Sunny
Total Time = 8h 00m
Overall Rank = 25/53
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 10/3
Pre-race routine:

Worked a 12 hr mid-shift, got off at 6 AM. Arrived at race start to total Chaos. Sensed everyone was lost and scrambling. Got T1/T2 set up, went potty and did some quick paced jogs in the grass. GF and I walked around a bit-let a stranger borrow some spare goggles. he was happy.
Event warmup:

Got wet suit on. Got into water. Coldish but not too bad. Did some warm ups and felt OK. Water very shallow, strong, cold wind blowing.
Swim
  • 16m 13s
  • 500 meters
  • 03m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Bad swim but I'm not sure what would have fixed it. Maybe if I had went out faster and got in with some better swimmers. I kept running into people who were breast stroking/walking.
What would you do differently?:

Start faster. Don't be so hesitant at the start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Long run up from water. Crossing gravel and sticker bushes. Ouch! I cleaned my feet and dryed them with towel. Rolled my socks on, slipped my running shoes on and off I went. I had decided earlier in week to ride without cleats, so i went with runners instead. Didn't lose too much on the bike and gained some in transition.
What would you do differently?:

T1 was pretty solid. Should have sat down sooner-I stumbled trying to change socks/shoes standing up.
Bike
  • 1h 01m
  • 10 miles
  • 9.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Here is were I started to falter. I should have been taking in more/some nutrition, but i overlooked it. I started to run out of gas towards the end and knew I couldn't fix it.
What would you do differently?:

Gel shot on the bike and some calories in the hydration. I went with plain water.
Transition 2
  • 00m 24s
Comments:

Running sahoes were already on. Just had to take off helmet and camelsback
What would you do differently?:

Eat something. Take a gel
Run
  • 30m 27s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

That moment where you WANT to go faster, but your body can't respond. THAT'S what I felt-after that it was just a matter of coaxing whatever I had left to my legs. I was spent, but it was a good exercise in NOT panicking and knowing what I need to do different next time out.
What would you do differently?:

Get some sleep, take in some calories
Post race
Warm down:

Wondered out loud why we didn't get T-Shirts. Wainted several minutes for a hot dog. had a beer and a water and drug myself home for a few hours sleep before working again.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep. Didn;t fuel right

Event comments:

I expected more from an Xterra race. Course wasn't marked very well, no volunteers in critical areas of bike course. NO TSHIRTSUCKS. Come On, people. 65.00 and I get a hot dog and NO TSHIRT. Volunteers got tshirts. I want a freakin TSHIRT! Probably won't do this on again.

I'll post a race report later, but I'm in agreement on a lot of points. This race was chaotic, last year was way better on the organization. I've already emailed the RD with my feedback. I will wait until there is updated info before signing up for next year, and if it doesn't update before the prices go up I may just skip it.

Immediately I felt attracted by the challenge. I have done plenty of biking this summer and a new motivation, particularly toward the end of the summer, was what I needed.

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
