Subject: Decisions, decisions
Hi,

My question revolves around a good starter bike that will serve me well for a couple of seasons before I spend the big bucks. I've got two options at the moment… A Raleigh Revenio 2.0 (~$800) or a Diamondback Century Disc (~$780). The reason i say that these are my 2 options at the moment is because due to being in the military I am able to get great deals on these bikes and they are within my price point (~$1000). I am open to other options as well and please feel free to steer me towards other products. I'm just getting started, and maybe i'm way off base starting with these bikes, but I am committed to the sport. Thanks and I look forward to hearing your responses.

The Diamondback has better components. It is a 10 speed and the Raleigh is a 9 speed. Both have 25mm tires. The Diamondback also has disc brakes which is a new development in road bikes. I'm not sure the jury is back on whether that'll become a standard feature in the future or if it is a passing fad.

The Raleigh does look better though . . .

If you get a chance to ride each before, do that and go with whichever one feels better. I think you're in the same ballpark either way you go.

My two cents. Buy used. I did and could not be happier! I visited several local bike shops and found that one (which btw is near a university) had a great selection of used bikes. They took some time with me, had me ride it and I was good-to-go!

I ended up spending $600 on a used Klein. I'm guessing my bike is about 10-years-old. FYI - the lowest cost new road bike was about $700. So I spent less and got a bike that was substantially lighter than any new one in my price range. In fact I just weighed it this past weekend and at 20.4 lbs (with bag and tools) I think I did pretty darn well!

(I did watch craigslist for awhile and was tempted but knowing next to nothing about bikes I felt better buying from a shop with helpful sales people.)

Good luck in your decision!

Thanks for the insight guys, I'm gonna look to test both and I'll post my observations. Thanks again
