Roughly 2 weeks left in Afghanistan!

YES!!!!  Numerous things to smile about in this post.  Way to go, Jonathan, so exciting you're counting just 2 short weeks until your return to the US!

OH I don't know how I missed that! CONGRATS!! YAY COME HOME!!!!

Sorry I too have been MIA lately.  I read every post, I just don't always find the time to post myself.  Last week before the students are back, so we are a bit hairy!

And I *may* have registered for IM Copenhagen on Monday.  My finger slipped, honest.

Originally posted by StaceyK Sorry I've been a bit MIA lately been busy at work and home so haven't had time to get much of my manatee fix. I have also really struggled with my hay fever and sleep for the last 3 weeks which has messed with my training because I'm feeling so tired I just can't be bothered. I find it so frustrating to I am so inconsistent with training. 25 years ago I could go to bed at midnight and get up at 5am swim 3-4k a day then go to school, go to basketball training, or swimming again, then ride home and study and it was all so easy. Now it's a totally different story. Anyway enough of my pity party, next week I am away all week for work so there won't be much training happening, unless where we are staying has a gym (must check that out) but once I get back then the plan is back into it. Oh and by then it will be spring so the sun might be up before 6:30am and it might rain only every second day.

Life, age, responsibilities, dogs...they all add up to a much heavier load than 25 years ago

Any good allergy meds?

Don't beat yourself up. You'll get back to it. What you can, when you can.

Jen, how was your Monday run?

I it.  I was hot and grumpy, but at least I got out of the house for a little bit.  I should have turned off the run/walk intervals on my Garmin.  The first walk interval came up and I could have kept going, but once I heard that buzzer, my legs just stopped.  Have to fix that for today.

Good for you! There are days where I still take that "you're going faster than the person on the couch" quote to heart. I can't get too down on it, because something is always better than nothing. Rah! Rah! Tuesday night :D

fake it till ya make it

lol...most days. Luckily I don't have a deadline for the making it part.

Awesome, indeed!  Safe travels back.

And then in no particular order...

As for wolves and hair, I maintain (through the force of a strong assertion only) that it acts as a boundary layer - much like a shark's bumpy skin - and makes the more hirsute among us blazing fast.

Copenhagen sounds beyond amazing - Tri-tourism!!! Vacation is the true fourth discipline in tri.

My entire family loves to point out ways in which exercise is unhealthy.  Oh well <sigh>.  I keep trying to get my sister to "run" a 5k with me - maybe if I buy her a ticket to Austin, she'll relent!  (would be worth it

OK, back to the ditch-digging here.

Matt

One could only hope.  But what's a better deal, this, or something cheaper like a PowerTap?

What power meters do you all use if you have one?

I picked up a power tap with 2 carbon 50mm wheels and disc covers for £600 off eBay, but I'm now tied to using those wheels when I want to use power. Or I learn how to build wheels I like the idea of a pedal as it can be switched over between different bikes quite easily, much like the stages crank arm.

Be sure to research that well if you ever look to buy. While the pedal itself may come off and reattach easily, getting everything torqued on and making parts "happy" has been another. I've had no intention of purchasing a set (or just one), so haven't researched as thoroughly as i normally would, but have heard enough to caution against thinking that this will be a super-easy install or swap for everyone.

ETA: Oh, and I've ridden a Quarq Cinqo Saturn for a few years and just took their upgrade to a Riken within the last few weeks.

Thanks. Will look into it. DC posted in the comments section of the link above that he's managed to get switched over in 5 minutes (with PRACTICE).

I own the full vectors and can switch them from my road bike to tri bike or vice versa in less than 10 minutes. That is the main advantage of pedal based power. I personally love them.

Hotter'n Hell Hundred: Report

For my new Texas friends and anyone else around the country that might be interested in coming down for this ride it really is a great event. Lining up at the start line with 12,000+ other cyclist is a sight to see. At 7:00am the cannon fired and .....we sat there.....and waited....and waited...and waited.... Apparently it takes a long time for everyone just to get to the start line. We were about 3-4k people back and it took about 10 minutes from the canon before we even began to move. It was another 5 minutes before we crossed the start line.

I rode this with our local tour team and our goal was to ride it at a moderate pace. Not too fast for the slower riders but not so slow that it would be dinner time when we finished. We started out forming a pace line and passed hundreds of cyclist as we made our way out into the flat hot dry lands of Wichita Falls. We stopped at aid stations every 20 miles and the aid stations are phenomenal! More food and drinks that you can possible handle and staffed with highly energetic friendly volunteers. They filled your bottles with huge buckets filled with water or powerade.

By mile 50 we were averaging about 20 mph so we were making good time but one of our tour team members began to bonk bad. We decided that we would all stay with her and get her to the finish. By mile 60 we had slowed way down and began literally pushing her. By mile 80 we were stopping at every medical tent trying to cool her down and by mile 92 we had to put her on the medical van to be sagged out. It was sad after the whole day but there was no way she could even steer the bike anymore with us pushing.

So Overall Thoughts: The ride is a great ride. Sure it's a little warm (my Garmin read 110+) however it's manageable with all the aid stations. It was very well put on and I think it's one that anyone close should do. We had a blast and partied the whole weekend.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
