Subject: Speed work before long bike day?
Work is killing my training schedule recently and I have to adjust a lot of days. I started training on Tuesday night with a local tri group and they do speed work on Tuesdays. This Tuesday would have been 16x200 as the main set. I was exhausted after work on Tuesday and didn't get off until after the track workout was over with. Think I was starting to catch something and just passed out when I got home and skipped all workouts all together. I moved running to tonight and Friday is my other main running day. What do you think of doing speed work the day before a long bike brick (5 hour ride + 45-60 min run)? Good idea..bad idea? I normally do 5x6min intervals on Friday anyway so I don't think it would be too bad but wanted any advice from anyone who does this or tried before I jumped in. This Friday I was going to switch it up and do an all out 5K + tempo workout, so either way Friday will be hard

I would skip the speed workout you missed and carry on with your plan......the rest you got was likely needed.

Yep, skip the hard workout. Whenever I miss a workout, my tendency is to want to make it up. Almost without fail my coach tells me to skip it and move on. This would be especially true with the long brick you've got planned.

You skipped the workout on Tues. It is skipped. Leave it alone & carry on with your training. I agree with the other posts. Don't dwell on the missed workout. It is gone, over, done. Don't try to "make up" the missed session either, just move on with whatever session your training plan has scheduled.

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

Improving speed in swimming is more than just doing a few sprints at the beginning and end of your workouts. It takes a little more thinking, but I promise there is no high level math involved!

One way to improve your speed is to do track work that totals the time and distance goal. The idea is to slowly condition your body to be comfortable at your goal pace.
