Bad idea or doable?

I've run 3 halfs and I'm a cyclist at heart so I'm good with the swim and bike.....it's just the run.

And I'm NOT a runner but I get the job done at beginner pace.

Thanks

Completely doable. I've never run a stand alone marathon, and I'm currently training for my fourth IM.

I didn't run a stand-alone marathon until 10 months after my first IM.

(Now I did run a 50-miler as a "training run" 10 weeks before my IM, but prior to that, my longest running race was a 15K.)

Were you able to train for a half without injury?  If so, it's absolutely doable.

Totally doable. I did my first IM before ever completing a marathon. I finished - not in record time, but OK for a first attempt.

The following year, I did a standalone marathon as my 'A' race. It was rough. My body took a real beating. The year after that, for my 2nd IM, my marathon time was faster than the previous year's standalone. Go figure.

So, the only way you'll catch me running a marathon now is after a proper 114.4 mile warmup.

The only 26.2 mile run I've done was during my one and only IM.  The longest run I did leading into it was about 17 miles.

For me it was about 18 miles was my longest run prior to my first IM.

Only run over that while in a race.

Only marathons I have done are in my 6 IMs  I have zero desire to do a stand alone

Depends... IM Whistler was my first and only marathon. My HIM time is 4.40, Oly is 2.02

It takes a lot to recover from a marathon so I decided against doing one in my prep phase. The experiance gained from doing one was less benefit than the recovery benefits of not tearing my body apart. The only thing I will do different is more long runs over a longer period of time. When is you IM?

Ditto all the others in this thread. Only time I've run 26.2 is in an IM. Longest training run beforehand is 18-20 miles.

for me it was more of convincing myself I could run a marathon distance prior to attempting an IM.

looking back, I would say not required, and probably had little to do with how I trained or performed in the IM.

so absolutely doable !

well THAT is an interesting question!

I actually bagged my first HM due to injury but then my next two were injury free (and 2 weeks apart - used the first to train through then knocked 12 minutes off my time for the 2nd).

My third I was undertrained because of the time of year (busy work schedule which I won't run into again) and tendonitis. I have a good PT and we are continuing to work together to keep it under control.

I'm currently in HIM training for September and so far so good **knockonwood**

Thanks everyone for your input - that makes me feel better

For me, I went the path of thinking I should do a marathon before I did my 140.6. In hindsight, I would not think it a requirement now. In some ways, I think training for the marathon alone was harder on me than IM training.

A stand alone marathon and the marathon in an IM are two totally different things.  The only thing the same is the distance.

Most people end up running the IM portion of their marathon around their long run pace anyway...until the end up walking portions eventually.

FWIW, I did 3 marathons before my first IM.  I ran two of them under 4 hours, and in the other race, I completely bonked and had the worst race of my life.  I ended up finishing 4:36 after laying on the side of the road for 20 minutes at mile 25.  My IM marathon...was 6:06.  LOL.  And just for the record, I ran more in training in prep for my IM marathon than I did for any of my stand alone marathons.

Totally doable. As many other have mentioned, I only run a marathon during my IM. My longest run prior to that was an 18 miler. I, however, run between 40 and 50 miles every week during my training.

IMO the only reason to run a marathon is to finish an IM. Never have done a stand alone, likely never will.

Good to know the majority opinion about marathons versus IM versions. I plan on running a stand alone marathon as it's a goal of mine but that won't be until next year. I wonder though, does this view prevail even for half marathons before HIM? Does it kind of wash together as a function of decreasing distance?

In the running world most people don't ever run the full distance before the race itself when training for a marathon.

As a runner I can say that having run several marathons, I don't think it would help me in an IM. It's a different animal.

You will be fine- trust your training and have fun.

Obviously plenty of people have done it. I am not one of them. I did 2 marathons before I even thought about triathlon, then my "reward" to myself for a BQ at the 3rd was to commit to Ironman.

I think the experience gained doing stand alone marathons was very helpful for IM. Mostly for the training (physical and mental) but also on race day.

I have done 5 Olympic, 4 half IM and 3 full IM and I have never done a stand alone marathon. In fact the longest I have run outside of the IM is about 16-18 miles.

just curious? which HIM are u doing in Sept?

I will be doing my first HIM in Sept - princeton (terrified) and did my first HM earlier this year. Do not plan on any runs more than 8-10 m in my HIM training as longer runs tend to beat me up and it's not worth risking injury.

    Pumpkinman in Maine! Good luck!

So far my longest training run has been 9 miles. I'm good with that

I've trained for eight IM's and have never done a standalone marathon.

Never done a IM, but am training for one. Have done one HIM (7 hours, run was 1:55). I've completed over 30 marathon and ultramarathons. I think in the end, having experience in knowing how to handle the difficulties of a tough, tiring, long run is very useful. Especially given the marathon portion is at the end when you are really suffering. But I don't think having finished a Mary will determine whether or not you finish an IM.

Good luck, put in the work, stay mentally tough, and you will make it!
