Set Up Events
Total Time = 1h 08m 46s
Overall Rank = 9/159
Age Group = Open Male
Age Group Rank = 2/3
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 with the rest of the cabin and ate breakfast. Went to the race venue early.
Event warmup:

Ran a few miles and did some swimming. Water was much colder than yesterday. Yeah that's right. BACK TO BACK TRIATHLONS. Right away I could tell I was extremely fatigued. Ran very very slow downhill and my HR was in Z3. Coach asked me to bag the race.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

Water felt good and cool. Took it really easy because I knew I was shot from the prior day and my muscles were cramping already during the warmup run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing; swam straight and smooth.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

Tried to help a guy in my race division get out of a wetsuit. Whoever zipped him permanently destroyed the zipper mechanism. After a minute or so a relay person came over to take over for me. The guy DNF'ed because he couldn't get the suit off AT ALL.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I felt like crap and didn't mind helping out someone who was looking to do good.
Bike
  • 35m 8s
  • 20 kms
  • 34.16 km/hr
Comments:

Easy cruise. Sat up to thank the volunteers for coming out where I could and kept the HR Z2/Z3. Low power.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, was a fun cool ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

uneventful
Run
  • 21m 8s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 14s  min/km
Comments:

This was the leg I was worried about because of my warmup. Jogged the first mile and then picked it up from there. Negative split the run and finished very strong at ~6 pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, tested my legs and muscles and adjusted pace accordingly.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing, had to get back to the cabin to pack up and clean to be out by 10:30

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Racing an Oly distance 100% all out through cramps the previous day.

Event comments:

Perfect end to race weekend. This was actually the Southeast Regional Sprint Champsionships... which I podiumed NBD. As expected all the heavy hitters raced hard in the half and oly the previous day and were dead for this one. The race was dominated by regular AG athletes instead of the Open athletes per Set Up's typical race results. Great venue. Great course. I'll be back next year for another full weekend of racing. This was a fun "recovery race".

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
