Hey all,
Anyone give me advice on what week you would repeat if you found you had an extra week of ironman training? I'm doing Fitz's Level 4 for swim & bike and level 7 for the run. His are 24 week training plans. This is my first ironman. Would adding another peak week be too much? I had planned to be on vacation, but it was cancelled so the extra week I accounted for is open for training. I can't find anything on a web search on this. Thanks everyone!

I'd do a Big Bike Week.

care to elaborate? I assume you mean repeat one of the big bike weeks overall which would include training in all 3 areas with the focus on the long ride?

I would suggest no running and swim as you feel like.  This is what I did a few weeks back (and what I prescribed to a couple of people I'm coaching):

Big Bike Week Workouts

Monday Off

Tuesday 1 hour

Wednesday 1.5 hours

Thursday 2 hours

Friday 2 hours

Saturday 3 hours

Sunday 4.5 hours

Totals: 14 hours

Without knowing much about you I won't get into the details of how to ride each of those workouts but you get the picture of what I would consider a solid week of riding.

Thanks for explaining! Would you do this bike week the week before the taper then?

Three weeks out from the race at a minimum.  Preferably 4-6 weeks out.

I'd second this - especially if your weaker leg is the bike, the more time on the bike the better. I'd probably do it 4-6weeks out.

I love this idea! Now I am jealous I don't have an extra week. What week do you typically recommend doing this?

If you are a fitness exerciser, you are unlikely to need extra electrolytes to replace those lost in sweat. If you exercise hard for more than four hours in the heat, replacment may be needed.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.
