Emmett, Idaho

Gem County Recreation District
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 42m 54s
Overall Rank = 65/157
Age Group = 50-55
Age Group Rank = 6/12
Pre-race routine:

Drove to Emmett, approx 40 min. Had coffee in car. arrived at t2, set up area, gave bike to volunteers to take to T1. Boarded the bus and went to swim start.
Event warmup:

Not very much-some light jogging and a few quick running surges. Did some upper body stretching
Swim
  • 33m 9s
  • 1600 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

Water was so murly-dark dark brown, couldn't see hands in front of my face. This tool some getting used to. This was one of my better swims-felt relaxed, no anxiety moments. Had good solid pace throughout.. sighting on the return leg could have been better-i was tryinh to stay clear of the faster females coming behind me. Warm up was short. Instead of starting way in the back, i started wider. I like this.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

unracked bike to find a rubber band broken and shoe dragging the dirt.. Spent a few anxious seconds trying to reattach rubber band. Finally jusyt riped shoe off and ran out of T1 with shoe in hand. I've got to work on getting into my shoes, because I'm struggling and swerving all over the place.
What would you do differently?:

better attachment points for rubberbands.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 44s
  • 24.6 miles
  • 19.49 mile/hr
Comments:

GO EASY was the mantra. Also wanted to test some hydration/nutrition startegies for 70.3 Hammer perpetum was a bit too strong. Was starting to get kinda full and sloshy by the run.
What would you do differently?:

mix nutrition weaker or try Heed instead. Bike fitness isn't there...yet, but It'sot horrible
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

I thought i nailed the transistion, but I got beat by alot of guys coming out of T2. Wow.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 51m 42s
  • 6.3 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Nutrition of bike started to catch up with me. I was having a hard time taking any water and my mouth was drying out. Little sips here and there, but mostly on my head and back.
What would you do differently?:

Bike nutrition has to change-have to be able to get calories and hydrate without ruining my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Stumbled around, talked to friends, went pee. Gathered my stuff, lost me helmet and drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

fitness and nutrition

Event comments:

I wish all of Boise's triathlons were ran as good. I did an Xterra event that completely SUCKED compared to this.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
