Pre-race routine:

Standard
Event warmup:

Put on my wetsuit. That always works up a sweat.....

Swam about 200 yards.
Swim
  • 30m 19s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

Probably my best swim ever. I swam at a very good effort, pushed the pace and felt like I was working as hard on the swim as I usually do on the bike or run. Very happy with this swim even though the auto calc says I took over two minutes per 100. Navigating was good. Drafting was good. Felt good.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

need to stop putting on socks for these shorter races. Maybe for all races.....
Bike
  • 1h 09m 34s
  • 40 kms
  • 34.50 km/hr
Comments:

This went well. My legs were not all the way recovered from last weekend but I was able to push a reasonable wattage and control the huge power spikes on the two monster climbs.
What would you do differently?:

This is definitely not an Olympic PR course.
Transition 2
  • 42m 7s
Comments:

Second fastest T2 of the day. Fastest was from a guy who took over three hours to finish. But, man was he fast in T2 :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. About as fast as I can do this without sprinting.
Run
  • 42m 7s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Went well. I wasn't sure at first how this was going to go but it went fine. I got to an uncomfortable comfortable pace and kept it there. I was able to count the number of people in front of me on the out and back and figured that I was in ninth. There was so much distance between me and number eight that I thought there was no way I could move up. However, on the "back" portion of the out and back I saw the first female (who started 5 minutes after me.... and I was pretty sure that I didn't have a 5 minute gap on her at that point). So, there was no rest for the wicked and I just kept chugging. To my surprise, I actually caught two of the folks in front of me, one of them (who was also in my AG) in the last half mile. I almost caught number 2 in my AG in the finisher's chute but ran out of real estate. Another quarter mile and I think I would have gotten him. Next time.
What would you do differently?:

I wound up beating the first OA female by 15 seconds, running two minutes faster than her. I guess it is good that I kept the hammer down as much as I could.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still tired from last week.

Event comments:

Love this grass roots race. They can accommodate up to 500 racers and I wish they would get a few more folks signing up to keep this one alive and well.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
