These crazy nuts are few and hard to find. Is there anyone in the group who has experience with long distance solo swimming? I've read a few books on the subject but I'd really like to converse one on one with someone who has personal experience with it. Thanks!

I do a few 5km, 10km races, but not solo swimming. Too many sharks!

Yup, and training to do Rottnest Channel swim in February (20K) and hopefully get across the Lombok Strait in 2017 or so (40K straight but have to follow a 60-70K curved path).

My husband (also on BT) has been doing it a long time and is actually really good at it. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/?setplanned=0&memberid=361955

www.openwaterswimming.com is a good place to start (sign up for the Daily Splash or whatever it's called). US Masters Swimming (I think www.usms.org ) has an open water forum, and some really good posters.

There are very good resources out there. Happy hunting and splashing, and ask away here if you want to know anything!

Wow, very impressive. I thought the folks that do the around Key West were pretty impressive (about 12 miles), but 60-70K across a straight is pretty awesome. Good luck!

Hi- I have done both Catalina and Manhattan as well as one of the 8 Bridges swim and other 10Ks. It looks like you are local - in NYC - and I would be happy to talk to you if you want. There are a number of us in the New York area and more places to swim than you might realize.

Not to hijack, but is there a good source for 5k+ swimming event listings?

The 13 700 was 30x400 @5.30 350 free/50 fly and then a set of 15x100 and then 200 easy. Took just around 3 hours. Last 100 on the set was 100 fly in 1:02 diving off the side.

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

I can't say it enough, the feeling of treading water for that final minute, helicopters over head, Mike Riley's Iron-voice over the P.A. - just awesome. I cannot believe I'm here!
