Swim
Comments: My first ever triathlon, and first ever open water race! Panic set in just after the start, so the planned crawl went a bit awry, and I ended up (once the crowd had dispersed) doing breaststroke pretty much the whole way, which meant efficiency was down, but navigation was easier. Was very, very relieved to get to the finish line and get out of the water! What would you do differently?: Warm up swim in wetsuit, and practice more open water before! Transition 1
Comments: Needed some time to calm down from the swim, and didn't like running barefoot! Things to work on for the next one! Feeding and getting on the bike went ok. Bike
Comments: I'd done this bike course last year as part of a relay team, so was familiar with it before I started. The bike was supposed to be my strongest discipline, and proved to be the case. The climbs, with a recovery on the descent on each lap suits my riding style. What would you do differently?: As it was my first triathlon, I maybe didn't push as much on the bike as I could have done, but I didn't want to use all my energy. Next time I think I can afford to go out a bit harder on the bike as I still felt good at the end. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was better than T1. Racked my bike the wrong way (newbie error) but managed to get sugar and shoes sorted fast and felt happy with the transition. What would you do differently?: Rack bike properly! Be less worried about making a mess! Run
Comments: Kept constant pace at 13km/h for the whole course (according to gps) with a sprint finish, so energy management seemed to be ok. Was tired at end, but still alive! What would you do differently?: N/A Run went according to plan. Post race
Warm down: Walk back to transition, some stretching, played hockey game that evening. What limited your ability to perform faster: Fatigue from previous days efforts. Lack of swimming ability, panic and breathlessness during the swim. Event comments: It was my first tri so I don't have a reference point. There was only one drink station on the run, which I passed twice (as it was a loop) but as it was a sprint distance, this may be normal, and I certainly didn't need any others. Free t-shirt always nice, especially as they has XS sizes which actually work for the female competitors! Sad that the swim cap they gave us for the race (women's sprint) was pink... bit predictable, especially as the relay teams had orange, and the guys a nice neon green.
