Subject: 20 mile training run redemption.
Two weeks ago my first 20 miler ever drug me into an alley, beat me up, stole my wallet and laughed at me. I drug myself home, licked my wounds and started looking forward to the rematch.

2 weeks ago summary
Time: 3:40:54
Distance: 20.1 mi
Pace: 10:58/mi

Today was redemption. From the beginning I was stalking that 20 mile beast. The first ten miles flew by, the beast was nowhere in sight. I hit the turnaround and there he was, in the form of a significant headwind. I laughed at him and pushed on through. My pace was good, my form felt good, I wasn't afraid of this little bully anymore.

That 20 mile punk kept trying to drag me into that damp dank, dark alley and slap me around. I wasn't having any of it. even though my stomach was a little off from trying to keep hydrated and nutrition, I was fighting off that little imp.

Finally around mile 15 I let my focus slip while I was picking up my drop bottles and refilling my waist bottles. The 20 mile demon had me in the very dark place. My pace had dropped below 10:00 min/mile, but the joke was on him. As soon as I was in the alley i fought back. I grabbed him by the lapels, and slammed him up against the crumbling brick wall. Loose grout and mortar was sifting like a fine powder, catching the stray beams of light. I started slapping that little 20 mile run upside the head. Open hand, back hand, open hand, back hand, over and over again. Bam, I was at mile 16. Sure I had been scratched up, punched in the gut a few times, but I knew I had this.

The 20 miler wasn't giving up. The next two miles was a fight. He threw some uphills at me, tried to slow me down when I picked up my dropped shirt, tried giving me a gut-ache, My right ankle was rubbed raw and sore, every dirty trick in the book. I slammed him back up against that alley wall, switched to my left hand, and really started giving him the business. At mile 19 I turned and left him crumpled in the alley. Feebly he tried to clutch at my Hokas and drag my pace back below 10m/m. I laughed over my shoulder, picked up my pace and finished strong. Completing my final mile well under 10m/m

Summary:

Time: 3:11:15
Distance: 20.12mi
Pace 09:30/mi

That little punk did get in one little final blow. My garmin wigged out, and didn't record any lap data. Just the summary. Still I feel fantastic especially compared to 2 weeks ago.

Way to go.  That's a great improvement and confidence builder.

Just wait until you meet his big brother that prefers to wait until 20 miles into a marathon before dragging you into the alley.

The 9:30 pace is right where I thought I should be, but I would have been fine with a 10:00. That's why I was so disappointed with my 11:00 pace two weeks ago. I knew it was all mental, but I was still a little surprised to clock that 9:30

I've got an appointment with the big brother in 3 weeks at the Top of Utah Mary. I'll be watching for the dark alleys at mile 20 or so .

Two weeks later I get to take on the uglier bigger brother at the North Face Endurance Challenge Utah 50k that beast might show up anytime, but I'm gonna face him!

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.
