Pre-race routine:

Drove over Friday afternoon and picked up packet. Early dinner then back to the hotel for the night.
Event warmup:

With temps at 5:00am in the 80s and high humidity it didn't take much to warm up. After setting up transition I went for an easy run. Did some stretching and was able to get a good swim warm up in since we were second to last wave.
Swim

  • 880 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty good swim. Started to the far left and sighting was pretty good. About halfway through I picked up the feet of a team mate and drafted him all the way to the beach. First time I've been able to draft for that long....clear water of the Gulf made it easy.
What would you do differently?:

Long run from beach may be included in swim time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Long run from the beach. Everything was uneventful
Bike

Comments:

Really did not know what I would be able to do here. Big dropoff in training due to illness and trying to regain fitness. Ended up averaging 220-225 watts which was probably 20 watts lower than I would have been targeting a month earlier. Felt pretty good on the bike but legs still were not back.
What would you do differently?:

Solid bike for my fitness level that day
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Pretty smooth...no major issues
Run
  • 00m
  • 4 miles

Comments:

Well, here is where the story ends. About 300 yards in my right hamstring locked up. Tried to walk it out but no luck getting it loosened up. Figured a DNF would be better than a season ending injury.
What would you do differently?:

Finish....first ever DNF
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hamstring issue......oh well there is always another race.

Event comments:

Always a fun race with a good awards party at the pool. Since I pulled out of the run early I was able to watch the last 200 yards to the finish. Kind of a mess with runners going out, runners coming in and bikes and cars coming in. No real defined lanes for the runners and bikers coming in and I'm surprised there were not some collisions in that area.

Heat was brutal this year with temps into the low 90s by 9:00am and heat index over 100.
