Subject: One week too close for 112 mile training ride?
I am doing my second annual home grown IronMan on 9/20 this year. I have not had a chance to ride the full 112 mile route, which I'd like to do. The soonest I can do this would be one week before, on 9/13th. Would this be too close to race day, or is a week for taper adequate?

way too close, you would be far better off resting than doing that ride. It takes 10 days to get the full benefits of training, and most plans really call for about 3-4 weeks between your last very long ride and your race.

Think of it this way, you want to do what will enable you to met your goals. Since this is a homegrown IM its a bit different. Are you looking for a PEAK performance, the I wouldn't. Would this ride put your in a hole for the 9/20 IM? If so I wouldn't, if not then it changes things. What is the GOAL of a 112 mile training ride? See where I am going with this?

Awesome that you are doing your own IM! Keep us posted.

My goal is two fold: familiarity with the route and get my butt in the saddle for that long (don't want to be sore during event though!)

Thinking about maybe doing it tomorrow, but I wouldn't be able to START until 4pm, so i'm getting done around 11pm. most of the drunks will be off hte road by then, and my personal opinion is that a well lit bike at night is safer than day riding anyway. thoughts?

Drive the course. And no riding your bike at night is far worse then during the day. Also riding at 4pm start time and finishing late is even more detrimental. What are you doing before 4pm? IF you have a busy day then you are starting a 7 HOUR RIDE already a bit tired, this is a no brainer to not go.

11pm is when most drunks will be off the road? I would argue and tell you that is usually when they start hitting the road.

Agree with the others here. This seems like a bad idea on a number of levels. The hay is in the proverbial barn at this point regarding your fitness for an event on 9/20. Drive the course and let your body recover during a well earned taper period. Good luck!

I wouldn't do it. Doing this ride will do nothing for improving your fitness or training at this point. Also, driving at night for that long on a bike is a bad idea IMO. Drive the course and rest, thats your best bet.

If this is actually just going out and doing 140.6, sure why not. If you can't recover in a day or two from a 112 mile ride, that will be the least of your worries on 9/20.

Sounds like this is just going out and doing the distance.

The 112/4 Race Rehearsal Brick. If done correctly, the RR is usually no more stressful than a regular training ride, and that is probably the point.
