Member 587 | Subject: Rev 3 & Challeng merge Received an email today that Rev 3 & Challenge are merging. I raced Rev 3 Williamsburg this June & enjoyed the race. Was considering a Challenge race now that they have a few events in the US. Let's see what opportunities this will lead to for triathletes. Hope they can continue to put on great races & grow the sport. BTW, the email only mentioned non-drafting races. Not sure what will become of the Rev 2 foray into draft legal tri. 4 SEPTEMBER 2014 - Challenge Family and Rev3 today announced a partnership that redefines long distance triathlon in North America. The two series are merging and, beginning in 2015, Rev3 races will be incorporated into the Challenge Family global triathlon series and branded as Challenge events. This combination will result in a stronger North American race series focused on delivering world-class quality events. Edit - Rev 3 Rush events to be run by Rev 3. Master 2500 Crab Cake City | Subject: RE: Rev 3 & Challeng merge I think this will be a good thing. Both companies have good reputations and excellent customer service and it does seem like a natural merger. |

Watch out WTC? I don't think its "Watch out WTC" as much as it could/should be short-course racing could have a big market series now. WTC has the Ironman distance thing down pretty well and I don't see that tide shifting anytime soon. The olympic/70.3 distance is a different story. Look at how badly WTC failed at the 5i50 series. I think Challenge/Rev 3 should look at this as a "where do we want to be in 20 years? Who are the athletes that will be racing in 20 years?" scenario. They won't get many bucket listers, or Ironman obsessed athletes. But they can develop the junior race series, they can build a strong short-course platform. Aim for the younger athletes/juniors, you AG's and let them develop. Then in 10-15 years market more to long course to those same athletes. 2 companies that have similar values and business models the fit seems natural. Rev 3 was really struggling financially and Challenge has the money, whereas Challenge is struggling with the US market and Rev 3 has a bit more knowledge on that area, its a win/win for both sides. This could also open the avenue to bring a pro series/division with these races, maybe the pros will take more notice this time around. Overall I think it is good for the sport, its not less competition just strong competition for WTC to stay on top of their game, but I do not see this as directly competing companies. Hopefully the Rev 3 Rush series is back as well for next year. |

Elite 3140 | Subject: RE: Rev 3 & Challeng merge I agree with most of what has been said but though this does not mean WTC/IM is going out of business, it is going to get competition in market share from Challenge. Challenge , unlike REV is in the 140.6 distance for the long haul. They pay their pros and though they have not been in the US til this year, they are here to stay. Challenge AC is run by Vigo and delmonte who have been RDing races for years in the US and I am sure other RD's are out there that will expand the 140.6. Challenge does have the money and can put heat on WTC/IM which I believe is great for the athletes. As I said IM is not going anywhere and will probably continue to be the leader in the US (because of their 35 years of unimpeded marketing in the US) but now with competition they will have to think long and hard about their policies. I truly think some of there refunds policies etc was a reaction to challenge. |

489 | Subject: RE: Rev 3 & Challeng merge Challenge it definitely taking on the Ironman brand in Europe. New or 'one and done' long distance athletes tend to gravitate towards the glitzy brand but, in Europe at least (I don't know about the US) the Challenge brand is really differentiating itself in price, service, attitude and its reputation as an athletes race as opposed to being 'all about the bottom line'. I tend to choose races based solely on the course - i think both companies are very competent and have had great experiences with both Ironman and Challenge but it's very important for both of them to have the credible competition of each other and should end up in much better experiences for us as athletes.

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Rev 3 & Challeng merge I think the triathlon scene in Europe is different than in the US. Most folks competing in Europe are highly competitive and fast in 140.6 races. I don't believe there is so much as a bucket lister type mentality in Europe in 140.6 races or even 70.3 races. I think together Rev 3 and Challenge can become a bigger name and player in the US market. I believe competition is good for most everything including our sport. I hope this will improve the tri market and make each entity bring their A game making the athlete experience and race a high quality. |
