Sprint races like the ones on the WTS or Jr Elite races?

Distance snobbery makes me laugh.

Argueably the great cyclist of all time, 5 time Tour de France winner, multiple time winner of all the Grand Tours, countless classic victories, 525 professional victories in all, Eddy Merckx was asked what the toughest event he ever did was. His reply, the World Hour Record. That's right, 60 minutes of all out, leave nothing left, beyond category effort. He said he couldn't get comfortable sitting, walking, or standing for three days afterwards.

ha ha ha

Also, some athletes do back to back triathlon sprint races.

I think for the lay person it comes down to feeling like they can do it (most able bodied people can complete a Sprint w some training) vs the general agreement that an IM is a pretty remarkable achievement/ commitment. Most people don't really care if you did a Sprint fast or slow or an IM fast or slow...They just know that they could do one and could probably not do the other. You know for yourself the effort your particular race took.

Dude....for the most part, "lay persons" couldn't care less about triathlon, of any distance.  You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

To your other point, most able bodied people can complete an IM with some training too......look around.

Well obviously it was a down year as his best competition was from fellow drafters and a duathlete.

So, all I have to do now is go win a 70.3 and then winning my sprints won't be scoffed at. Hahaha, sigh.

The fastest guy in my club focuses on sprints.  And wins his fair share.

Anyone who'd scoff at him is more than welcome to go for a run with him.

See! I've heard that and read it somewhere, before... That sprints people are forced to go all out... But I thought that was the case with ironmans and stuff too, only you have to have way more endurance :/ but I haven't done those yet so I honestly don't know. :/

While technically you never go "all out" in any distance triathlon, it's an extremely intense race. Truly "all out" is a 100 meter dash. Try and maintain that intensity for an hour I've done all distances, and sprints flat out HURT. Just cause it's short doesn't mean it's a joke. I saw someone list the pain and recovery levels for each distance and it was something like on a 1 to 10 scale(10 being agony), Sprint (during/after) 10/1, oly(9/2), half (5/5), Iron(1,10). In other words, sprints hurt way more than other distances, but when its over, it's goes away quick.
I don't care how good you are, you're not racing an ironman at the same intensity as they can do a sprint.

Anyone who says a sprint is a joke of a race isn't doing it right.

Honestly, I would wave my award in my boss' face and ask him when HIS last tri was, but I'm immature like that. You certainly don't see me telling Usain Bolt that he is lame just because I've done a few marathons.

If you like doing shorter distances, than do shorter distances! This is a fun hobby for you, right? Do what you love, F everyone else.

I'm like this too. It's fun to see the look of derision vanish from somone's face when you toss it back at them. I've been laughed at because I not only race Sprints (only 2 so far), but I race as a "Clyde". All 3 individuals that were giving me flak back off real quick when I offered to pay their entrance fees so we could go head to head . The icing on the cake (mmmm.... cake....) is that all 3 of them are backing down from a 5'9" 250lb 41 year old when they're all in their early 30's and at least appear to be in decent condition.

So... I say challenge your boss to join you!
